I recall this game. We were about to start shooting on the second day of my film. I turned to Ross, one of our actors, who plays Rugby and asked, "Is there any way England can score and win this game?" I love Scotland, but sometimes we do have a habit of messing things up at the last minute.

I remember a few years ago, it was really bad here. There were high winds and heavy snow. We lost electricity for a while during the night and fire engines were going round to check everyone was OK. I tried going to work the next day, but there were no trains running from the station I could walk to. That was fun!!

Snow? In March? 'Tis dashed unseasonal I tell ye...

Last time I remember it snowing in March was about ten years or so ago. I was at a comic con in Glasgow, happened to glance out of a window while I was getting something signed and muttered words to the effect of "Bloody hell! It's snowing!"

Yesterday, it took me about half an hour just to get to the corner shop and back again. Usually, I make it in ten minutes.

Had to go out and pick up my dad's meds from the Health Centre - by gum 'tis like a bloody skating rink out there! And before anyone asks, no, I did not fall on my backside. Came pretty darned close a couple of times though...

Nel
March 13th, 2006, 06:31 AM
It does seem to be clearing abit here. I had to go out and get my cat some cat litter, but managed to make it there and back in one piece.

But it is weird to get weather like this in March, and they seem to think it is going to continue for a week or so. I think Spring got lost somewhere - maybe we should send out a search party.

Okay...On Scotland Today, they were debating what should be Scotland's national anthem, with 'Scotland the Brave' being used at the Commonwealth Games, and 'Flower of Scotland' being used for most other things.

So what do you all think?

Me?

Flower of Scotland.

Missster.Freeman
March 21st, 2006, 12:15 PM
Heh, Suekay, I was just watching Reporting Scotland myself. I used to love "Flower of Scotland". But now, it just sounds like a depressing dirge. Besides, no-one seems to know the lyrics anymore. :(

Now, If anyone has been watching the Commonwealth Games, they would have heard the uplifting "Scotland the Brave" being belted out regularly. I never tire of hearing that tune. That would be my choice, it just sounds more positive compared to "Flower of Scotland".

Welcome silverdamascus - glad you decided to join us.

sueKay - I think I agree with you about the anthem. I love Flower of Scotland, particularly as I tend to relate it to the rugby. But I can see Missster.Freeman's point.

I think we are lucky as there are a number of great anthem-type songs that could be used.

I dunno. I quite like Flower of Scotland as we stick it to the English in it :D

Seeing as this a Scottish thread I must actually direct you to a Scottish song called "Pride of a Scottish Nation". it was written by a group called The Promise and one of the band members has moved on to acting. I recently designed his website and we put a music section on the website. I'd like to know what you fellow Scots think?

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=370618&songID=2654083

And the website of the Actor who was in the band:
http://www.robertharrison.info/

This song was written for the intentions of entering it into the competition that was being held back in 98. They were looking for an official World Cup song for Scotland, but due to some cheap under the table tactics Del Amitri's downbeat "Don't Come Home Too Soon" won it. :( Not exactly encouraging?

Anubis69

Flower of Scotland IMO. WRT Missster.Freeman's comment about no one knowing the words, i've found a lot of people know the first verse, but not the second. Me included btw. It's a great sing-song at the pub or a party though!

On the other hand, i'd equally like to see "500 miles" be the national anthem... :D

Which version of Scotland the Brave is it? I am pretty sure Runrig did something similar for "Loch Lomond". Listening to that just now and am getting Goosebumps.

"You'll take the high Road and I'll take the low road
And I'll be in Scotland before ye!
Where me and my true love will ever meet again
On the bonny bonny banks of loch Lomond!"

Is excellent for the end of weddings this song is!

I've just had a listen Indiana. It's quite good, not quite my taste in rock music, but it would've made a better World Cup anthem than that Del Amitri crap.

I don't think it's right to ay you can't wear your National dress just because other countries don't have one. What if there was a country that didn't have a flag or a national anthem? Would we be denied flying our flag or playing our anthem?

It's probably just a matter of etiquette. Everyone wears the tracksuit of their country. Arguably, it looks better. It has more of an effect, they look more professional. Same way employees (say at Tesco) wear the same uniform and if there's a change in uniform, they change all at one. Maximum impact. Probably their view...

Do you not think it kinda highlights the problem in Scotland though? Everyone's trying to push "healthier Scotland" and yet people who try to embrace the healthy option get their bike stolen so wasters can pawn it off to buy some drugs, alcohol or any other assorted "unhealthy" item of their choice...

They probably film bits in Edinburgh as well, but I suspect Greenock is easier, as it won't be so busy and parking wouldn't be such a problem.

There are often TV trucks, costumes, food, etc on Kings Stable Road in Edinburgh, and I've often wondered if it's Rebus they are filming then. But I usually go past it too early in the morning for anyone to be around.

I ain't kidding! We call him H.J. (Horizontal Jogger). His proud (?) boast is to have gotten himself "intimate female companionship" for each night of every Con he's been to.

Married woman? No problem! He'd see it as a challenge.
Older woman? No problem! I'm willing to swear in any court you'd care to nominate, that H.J. had once carnal knowledge of his female pen-pal, who is old enough to be his mother, and was still married at the time the deed was done.

I could go on all day about his exploits, and the wind ups he's perpetrated upon me...

OK - so what has happened to Spring. I've heard of April showers - but this weather is ridiculous!! I was going to go out for a walk this afternoon, but there hasn't been enough time between the torrents of rain to even step foot outside the door.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I thought it was just me, expecting Spring to have sprung. Saying that, there is a lovely avenue of daffodils near where I live. When I saw that it cheered me up, but it seemed to emphasis how late the rest of nature is in coming to life.

Well, to quote Tony Hancock in "The Radio Ham" - "It are raining here also." In fact, it's positively tipping down...:(

Thankfully, it's just a quick dash from the Greenock Public Libarary to the shopping centre, then another quick dash from there to Tesco (gotta do some shopping for my dear ol' mum y'see). After that a nice taxi home.

Well, mum's in her 70's, and dad was 81 last birthday. Neither of them get out much cos dad doesn't drive any more since he had his heart valve replacement op a year or so ago...

So, it's down to me to do about 90% of the shopping.:cameron:

It is still good of you to do it - I know many sons who wouldn't help, and would let the social services take over the strain.

^A lovely quote from Braveheart! :D I always say that when it's rainging... To which people reply surprisingly angrily to. :S

It's been a cracking night here... Nothing but sunshine. On the way back from Irvine it reminded me of winter. The impossible to drive in, low, blinding sun ... That takes me back! :P

Hello, I just found this thread thanks to SueKay...

I was raised in Glasgow, I lived there for 7 years and did all my primary school... (Hyndland Primary School) I just want to say how much I loved it... and how many nice memories I had of my school, my park, my candie store, the brownies, ballet school... it's was the best time of my life :D

I've always wanted to go back and just walks the streets... I still remember the way from my house to my school... it's funny how are things you don't forget... I still sometime say "Ay" when I want to say "yes" :D

SueKay, I went to Loch Lommond when I was 5... it was so exciting... I remember there was signs on the board of the lake saying you are getting closer to the "danger" zone LOL and at five... that's pretty scary :p

Well, bottom line, just wanted to say "Hi" and Scotland Rocks!!!!!!!!!!

AmberLM - I promise I'm not following you, as I seem to be welcoming you to threads in various places, but welcome to you, and to you LOL4JACK.

I remember those signs too, when my Uncle took us there one day when he was babysitting. Being me, I wanted to jump in the loch. And I had a history of ending up in water wherever I could find it when I was young.

LOL Suekay.... I can't believe there are still there... it makes me definitely want to come back.... There's a new direct flight from New York to Glasgow... I keep looking at the prices waiting for them to come down...

I still keep in touch with my best friend there.. Averil :p.... and I'm talking that I left Glasgow 25 years ago....

(((((Missster.Freeman))))) Thanks for the welcome... Well, for many years I consider myself to be scottish, although I forgot how to speak :( they used to make us read Robert Burns at school, I still have some of his poems, but I have NO IDEA what they say :p but hey... I'll take the title of Long Lost Scot!!!

Me too MY Mum does the same. Mind you copying some of his tricks used to get me into a right lot of bother. Just had a thought, they could set up their own SG team with Colonel Wullie, Major Primrose, Fat Boab(Tealc), and Dr Soapy with wee Eck in charge of dialling the gate. God I think I've finally flipped time to go to bed.

Wow, SueKay, did you take all of those photos around Glasgow? I had no idea Glasgow was so pretty!

Oh, BTW, LOL4JACK, my dad has this friend who grew up in Glasgow until he was a teenager and then moved to Australia. I'd never noticed until recently but he kinda switches between a Scottish and an Australian accent at random depending on who he's talking to and what he's saying. It's quite cool-sounding when the two mix occasionally!

:D *waves back to M.F* I'm originally from Dundee, where The Broons and Oor Wullie, and The Sunday Post, are published. There's even a wee shop in the city centre where you can buy the annuals and look for back issues etc. Very cool. :D

LOL Amber... Well, I learned english in Glasgow and in a way it was my first language, I'm from Venezuela... :p I lost my Scottish accent :( although when I say Scotland... I know no other way to say it than with a scottish accent :D but it's a little bit english/scottis a little bit American, because I know live in the US and a little bit Latinamerican... so people get very lost trying to figure it out... although somebody said the other day that it sounded Australian!!! I guess that's what Scottish, American and Venezuelan accent do :D

Edinburgh is fabulous, SueKay! I almost decided to go to Uni there but I figured I'd spend more time staring out of the classroom windows at the beautiful city surroundings wishing I was outside instead of stuck in a dull, grey lab! Lol Not that Aberdeen isn't lovely too but the science buildings are a bit nicer inside than Edinburgh's so it's not so much of a contrast between the outside & the inside!

If you're looking for a place to stay and you're driving there's a lovely little travel inn in Musselburgh, just outside the city. The restaurant and views are lovely!

Oh I wouldn't worry about it! When I was in the US I was asked if I was Scottish (although it's not Liam Gallagher-esque, I do have a slight Mancunian accent which sounds NOTHING like a Scottish one) and I was even asked once if I was Egyptian (although I suspect the lady on the bus who asked me that was, lets say, a few fries short of a happy meal to coin a phrase!) If you're not from a place it's hard to place the accent. I still have a real problem distinguishing between Lancashire and Yorkshire accents even though I grew up on the Manchester/Lancashire border!
