I once saw a few scenes of this episode while channel surfing. Sam, Daniel and Jack were blurred streaks running down the hallway. I was aware of the show but at the time I wasn't watching it. So I see this scene and my thought was..."the charaters on this show have superhero powers!?!" I laughed at the absurdity of that and changed the channel.

I didn't become a fan of the SG-1 until SciFi started airing the show from the beginning. The first episode hooked me completely. So when I later saw this entire episode my reaction was..."they have superhero powers? Cool!"

I especially enjoy the restaurant scene when Sam orders a diet soda to go with her cow. "I like the taste better." :D

I liked this one. The superhuman powers were cool. The bar scene was very funny, as was Siler.

Anyone notice that written on the blue and red armbands were the words "with great power comes great responsibility..."

I wish there had been more of the fight scene shown. All I got when I watched it was a couple of moves, then the scene switched to outside the resteraunt. I don't know if there is any more on the DVD.

There isn't. But I like it the way it is.
I love Hammond in this ep. Especially the scene with Jack in his office: GH: Just --- Get the HELL out of my office! :D

Yeah, she was a lot better than most of the Tau'ri/Tokra ambassador type dealies.

This was a good episode, at the end when Teal'C says: "I Have no need to apologize." That was humourous.

This one of my favorite quotes also. Especially after the rest team aplogized to Hammond. After the quote above, Hammond replied, "Teal'c was obeying orders."

Yeah I watched this episode again today, and that line gets me still. There are a couple more, mostly from Jack when he is Hammond's office wanting to kick some goa'uld butt. And from Daniel when he and Teal'c are waiting for the C4 to go off.
I can't quote the entire conversation verbatim but the final line that gets me is when Daniel says to Teal'C: "Just wanted to make sure it was an informed decision"

This ep is so funny, second in line to Window of Opportunity, IMO. The restaurant scene is the best. However, one little nit pick. Daniel has beer, but in Shades of Grey when Jack offers him one he said he doesn't like it. Huh?

I don't know why anyone would call Daniel a geek. He wasn't even wearing his glasses. Besides, Dr. Daniel Jackson is so far away from being a geek. "Daniel, let it go." "Not this time, Jack."

"We're going to need snacks." :p

I reckon they must have been known to each other, and "Not this time" meant that they'd taunted him before. And he doesn't look geeky, but he did have a very geeky manner particularly in the first year or two, so 'geek' might have been the pool playing guys' name for him.

I loved all the quotes, like the diet-pop thing. I kind of have a question, though...
When Jack says: Earth, steaks...there's a difference

I've never been able to hear/remember his inflection well enough to know--does he say it with a question mark at the end, or not? As in, "Is there a difference?" or admitting that there IS a difference.

I've seen the ep. several times, and never been quite able to tell.

This was a GREAT episode! I loved the idea of superpowers, both physically and intellectually. I was particularly impressed by how fast they could read books, and how Carter wrote a book in a few hours. What a great opportunity for her and Daniel to learn and record information.

I wouldn't want to take the armbands off myself!

As always, I was impressed by Teal'c stubborn determination to help his friends, whether they wanted his help or thought they needed it, or not.

Lovely humour in this episodes as well:

-O'Malley's -- the sneaking out, the steaks, the fight

-sneaking off world

-Jack's childlike enthusiasm about his new powers and wanting to use them ASAP

-Hammond's combo of exasperation and amusement at Jack

This has to be one of my all time favorite episodes as well. I love -

- the boxing scene with Jack and Teal'c
- the running away from SGC to the restaurant
- the ordering part (Jack ordering 3 steaks and the others agreeing)
- Daniel being the "don't mess with me kind of guy"
- the shippy scene with Jack & Sam (overlook the mush non-shippers)

All in all, it's one of the best !

My favourite bit in this episode is the Daniel reading bit. Firstly when Jack flips trough the book and then Daniel tries it - then later when he says ... yes but I can read REALLY fast. That's my boy - never mind the awesome powers - he can read fast!
Lots of comic moments in this..... Teal'c - I have no need to apologise - too right! And the whole going out for steaks bit - very funny.
I really felt for Teal'c when he was standing at that force field waiting for Jack and Sam - he wouldn't leave them.... what a hero he is.

This was definitely one of the great SG-1 episodes. I'm not sure why the man in the bar called Daniel a geek because he wasn't wearing his glasses and doesn't really look like much of a geek, but watching him stand up to them was funny!

I liked O'Neill taking a chunk out of hammond's office, Teal'c was funny at the end, O'Neill boasting about his strength:

ANIS: Squeeze this, it will measure your strength.

O'Neill squeezes and a computer beeps

ANIS: Amazing, you have three times the strength of an average human.
O'NEILL: No change then

Absolutely. Me too. I just love the way the armbands not only give SG1 superpowers, but also completely skew their judgement. How Jack thought that disassembling the General's office was a great advert for how useful he could be with his new superpowers is an example in itself...

One thing that interested me was that, while Anise's presence prevented Freya from wearing an armband (and so they assumed that Teal'c wouldn't be able to wear one either), the presence of the protein marker in Sam didn't make a difference to her wearing one. Normally the protein marker seems to get in the way almost as much as Junior does when they encounter 'goa'uld proof' technology. But not this time.

Either that is one seriously clever armband, or it can introduce the virus and gauge whether it's spreading the very instant it is placed on the arm - and then engages depending upon the success of the infection. Given that Freya couldn't wear one because of Anise, they just assumed that Teal'c wouldn't be able to because of Junior - I bet if he'd tried one it would have engaged in the first instance, and then fallen off when Junior healed the virus the next time Teal'c went into a state of Kelnoreem. In Sam's case, she retains her human immune system, so I suppose that was how she got the infection.

Just a thought.

I totally enjoyed this episode. I liked everything about it, including both Jack's and Hamond's distrust of Anise and her possible "hidden" motives, to the hilarious scenes in the restaurant/bar. I also thought it was a great lead into the episode about the Zatarcs, sorry, I'm blanking on the title. Phoo.....let me think about it. I can't remember it. :S

*nips off to check the omnipedia...*

Yup. It's Za'tarc.

I just love the moment when the Waitress is about to leave, thinking that they've ordered - only to find that it's just the one order...

Given the size of the steaks on offer in one particular restaurant my folks visited on their hols in the US (sixteen ounces!), and assuming that the steaks on offer in that restaurant weren't too different in size, those must have been some seriously extreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeme protein cravings!

Mind you, I bet AT, RDA and MS never wanted to see a cereal bar again by the end of filming that episode...

Don't think I've reviewed this one yet, soooo...

What was good:
a. The armbands. Ah, the jewelery that launched a thousand shippers...
b. The bar fight at O'Malley's, although I wish we'd seen more of it.
c. Anise. Okay, so in reality she bugs the sniggles out of me, but she's just so much fun to laugh at. It's not the actress's fault, I don't think, just the character. She's practically the epitomized "sexy alien female" suggested in "Wormhole X-Treme!"
d. Jack knocking Siler down the stairs. It's always poor Siler... :(
e. Odd humerous bits that make me snort root beer out my nose.

What wasn't good:
a. Slightly cliche plot (and sexy alien female, but not going into that.) ;)
b. Siler always gets hurt, and we always get the short end of the Tok'ra deal. Don't try to tell me that they didn't know someone else, somewhere, who'd wear the stupid bracelets. But that's just part of the show, and I more or less live with it.

Once you use the armbands can you only use them once? or a few days later try them again?

Also, how many armbands are there? On short missions, sg1 could use them, complete the mission easily, and run back.

At the end of the episode they reveal that once you've worn the armbands and they come off then you become immune so you can't use them again. So SG-1 can't use them ever again. And I'm kinda glad cause it would just ruin it if they had super powers all the time.

Chaka's_Mum
July 15th, 2005, 04:16 AM
Me too. It would have been incredibly dull if, every time an SG team gets into trouble, SG1 (or others) whap on a couple of armbands and 'superman' them to safety.

Besides, we all saw how Jack, Sam and Daniel lost a great deal of their common sense and self-control while wearing the armbands. These nifty little bits of equipment may well confer enormously enhanced strength, speed, stamina and goodness-knows-what-else on the wearer, but it seems to be at the expense of judgement and forethought. Not only that, it also makes them self-confident to the point of outright arrogance.

Okay, that first act of disobedience only led to a bit of a punch-up in a restaurant - which was quite amusing, albeit a bit embarrassing for the Air Force. The second, on the other hand, was a gross breach of discipline (at least on the part of Jack and Sam as Airforce Officers); they ignored strict orders to remain on-base, assaulted SGC staff and illegally activated the Gate - simply because they had decided in their (highly impaired) wisdom that Hammond had made a wrong call, and was wasting a prime opportunity to put their newly acquired abilities to use.

Nah - those armbands are best left where they fell off. :D

zats
August 11th, 2005, 07:21 PM
Yup.

Interesting point made on commentary: did anyone notice how Sam lets her hair go? I mean, she was wearing it sort of mussed at the time anyway, but it gets almost ratty before the armbands fall off (and yes, they were best left where they fell).

Perriman33
August 14th, 2005, 05:27 AM
Those armbands were cool, it's a bit naff that they only last a little while and you can't use them again. But it was funny watching them go through the gate and bash the jaffa. We never really saw them examine the armbands or test them before they put them on which was the only bit I thought was odd.
And jack knocking Teal'c out was hilarious *revenge at last--jack thought*.
Anise is so funny, a bit like a spoiled model pouting away.
They never learn to not trust the Tokra. Doh! :D

To be honest, I think General Hammond was very wise to try and keep SG-1 on base and out of trouble.

Given how things had turned out at the restaurant, and the fact that Jack, Sam and Danny weren't supposed to have left the Mountain in the first place, he knew that their individual senses of judgement and proportion were highly impaired - hardly a good thing for a covert seek-and-destroy mission. As for Jack coming into the office and virtually demanding to be allowed to get out there and destroy the new ship - it was pretty much inevitable that General Hammond would refuse to let them go.

All they did when they completely disobeyed orders and went anyway was throw the whole judgement impairment thing into very sharp relief. And they didn't even have 'Earth in immediate Jeopardy' to excuse their actions this time around.

That said, until the rotten armbands fell off, they were well kicking Goa'uld butt! Go SG-1!:D

Just watched this episode again, and I have to say that it still is amazingly entertaining after the 5th time watching it. When they go to O'malleys and carter orders the diet soda I was laughing my head off. However that raises the question what soda would the waitress bring? all carter said was diet soda and the waitress left? anybody got a answer?

cafine_us
June 19th, 2006, 09:35 AM
Funny catch. The writers probably couldn't have Sam say any particular soda, or else it would appear that the show was endorsing a certain brand. Perhaps O'Malley's only carries one kind of soda?

:) I know the show is filmed in Canada, and while on Earth on the show they are in Colorado. I'm from Texas. :) While some people DO say soda where I live, we mostly just say coke. Like the soda aisle in Wal-Mart is the 'coke aisle'. Or we say we feel like a coke. And seriously, if you ask me for a coke, I'll ask what kind! Just one of those things!

To be on topic, it makes me laugh when Sam orders a diet soda when she's going to eat 3 or 4 steaks! I would have loved to see their table!

That sounds a bit like people calling vacuum cleaners 'hoovers', which we do in the UK (and you guys in the US might do the same, I'm not sure) - it also serves as a verb as in 'I'm going to hoover the lounge'. Not only that, it gets used quite regularly as a euphemism for eating, too - as in 'You finished off the cake, crumbs and all? You hoover!'.

Just to contribute to the topic drift for a moment - I don't think anyone in the UK uses the term 'soda' at all to refer to fizzy drinks. These days, most people use the brand name. I'll have to see what my local supermarket calls their 'fizzy drink' aisle...

Anyway, back to topic again.

I love the moment when Sam orders the diet drink as well - accompanying her three steaks. I'm with her, actually. I always prefer diet coke to regular because my teeth feel horribly sticky and 'coated' after regular coke. Yuck.

Spontaneous is a good word. I'd add 'impetuous' to that, not to mention 'not in full possession of their faculties' - except that's seven words rather than one. :)

And Dead sexy!!!

This one of my favorite quotes also. Especially after the rest team aplogized to Hammond. After the quote above, Hammond replied, "Teal'c was obeying orders."

One of the few times, imo where it was teal'c coming in to 'save the day'. Up till then, the team has saved teal'c more often than not..

This was a GREAT episode! I loved the idea of superpowers, both physically and intellectually. I was particularly impressed by how fast they could read books, and how Carter wrote a book in a few hours. What a great opportunity for her and Daniel to learn and record information.

That is a great point. It makes me wonder which books jack chose to read up on..

As to me.. i only really had 2 gripes...
1) Why did they not go more into the race who MADE the armbands.
2) is it me, or did that new type of ship look almost like it had a BIG golden head atop it..

Chaka's_Mum
March 17th, 2007, 10:32 AM
I suspect that we don't hear more about the Atonieks for the simple reason that Anise doesn't have anything more to tell us. Anise knows that the armbands gave the wearer great powers, and that the Atonieks were a great civilisation that pre-dated the Goa'uld. Chances are that there was some crossover between the two groups, given that the armband won't even connect to someone who carries a symbiote, but other than that, the only other thing that is known for sure is that the race has died out.

In some ways, the lack of a backstory for the Atonieks is what makes 'Upgrades' possible. Had they known more about them, and how the armbands worked, then they would have known from the outset that the armbands were essentially useless in the long run. Sometimes we just don't know as much as we would like to about a race of people, despite one or two tantalising glimpses in the archaeological record.

Yes, I think the ship did have a big golden head on it - but given that Apophis has a great big head, that seems appropriate!:D

The 'Tok'ra Spice' reference comes from an article on H2G2 (the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Earth Edition) which can be found in the 'Talk' section of the BBCi website. I would include a link, but given that the article goes up to season 9 and is crammed with spoilers, I'm not going to. It's easy to find, though, as there's a search engine which will locate it for you.

I don't think we came up with Tok'ra Spice over there on h2g2 (yep, there were several of us GateWorlders involved in writing that) - in fact, I know we didn't because I know that I first heard the phrase here (maybe it used to be Starguide back then?)

anyway, here's a link to the entry - because if any of you GWers are also
h2g2'ers you might want to write up S10... it can be updated and you get your name in lights and everything (and also, because I take any chance to plug h2g2)

It's a good read and I was going to post a link myself then got a hot flush over the prospect of it containing spoilers because of the recent update to season 9!:o

Tragic. Yes. I know.

I shall second the H2G2 plug here, too. I haven't been there in a while (apart from revisiting the Stargate article to check that I hadn't misremembered where I came across the 'Tok'ra Spice' term) but it's a great place to go and I really must pop back sometime and do more than make references to curdled milk in my journal.

It was great seeing Sg-1 with 'super-human' powers and how they lose rational behaviour. The scene in the restaurant was hilarious, "Well, this is a cliche", but I felt sorry for Teal'c missing out on all the fun :( I think one of the best scenes from their 'mission' however, is saved for Divide and Conquer.

Jack's "No!" to Carter and the look between them afterward is wonderfully intense and emotional

It seems some people had a problem with Anise in the episodes she was in, but personally, I liked her. I only had a problem with her outfit in Divide and Conquer, but overall, I thought she was a great actress and wish she could have come back on occasions. :)

It has it's moments - that's for sure.

Watching Jack's complaints about the Tok'ra trail off as Anise arrives, the exchange of names and their meanings - which again he trails off...

The scene in the Restaurant is hilarious - ordering three rare steaks and a diet soda. Class. And, to be honest, I like the taste better, too.

Mind you, the punch up at the end of the evening was absolute proof that General Hammond was right to take them off active duty. The fact that they weren't even meant to be off the base - but had still managed to get themselves into a pub fracas nonetheless showed just how impaired their judgement was.

I heard Stan Lee speak at a college in Connecticut many, many years ago...and/or I read it later in an interview with him...where he said he enjoyed reading the Bible as Great Literature and a source of story ideas. I think he may have said at that time that the "with great power comes great responsibility" quote was adapted from what Jesus Christ says in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 12, verse 48: "For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more."

That's the King James version that Stan might have read years ago. A contemporary translation reads: "From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked."

I'm all for cool alien technology, but this wasn't very realistic. Let's say that they were given the strength to hit, kick, and punch things with extreme power. Wouldn't the bones that make up their body brake under the pressure? If you strike a steel wall with a sledge hammer with the force of let's say 1,000 pounds the handle of the hammer would break before the wall would.

The whole thing throws the laws of physics out the window. Even so it was extremely entertaining to watch them take out that entire mother ship and I wish I could read that fast.

No it isn't realistic to talk about building wormholes. We've no original knowledge about how to build them apart from the alien technology we've managed to get our hands on and what we've figured out from that.

:D

Actually, all joking aside - I really do love it that what we look for in the (or a) show isn't "is this something that I can experience in my everyday life?" (like a soap) but the continuity and the ability of the whole team to make a world that survives with consistent rules about how things work (mostly)

It's like when you watch Star Trek (especially TOS) and they get stuck, and we're all shouting things like "reverse the polarity to the forward shields" - because we know that in a consistent universe of Trek tech, that kind of thing works. Like in BSG they can't beam anywhere and they show the miners who are making the fuel.

I've gone right off Stargate recently, but conversations like this remind me why it was so brilliant.

ok. For all the scientific Geeks, got a question for you. According to Sam and wormhole physics, whatever enters the wormhole exists in the same speed right? Yet if you see Season 1, 2 and a few others... in many of the episodes they step in normally and fall out on the other side with a force. So how is that possible. According to the Scientific explanation, the distance travelled shouldn't matter. What matters is the speed of entry which should be the speed of exit if matters break into pieces and gets joined again. Extra force cannot be counted for that.

Possible plothole maybe?

Plague - you know how some of us were just talking about how our inner anorak likes Stargate because it is (mostly) consistent? Well....

The whole, entry/exit speed for the wormhole thing is one of those instances where you just have to pretend that Sam never spouted such obvious rubbish - or else TPTB were playing hookey that day and didn't catch up on their notes.

As for Anise. Where to begin...

Actually, I'm not going there again. Except to mention that her boobs are lopsided and it really really keeps me from paying attention to 99% of what she says or what happens when she's onscreen.
I saw Upgrades for the first time in ages and ages last week and the exit speed was something that really stuck out for me.

I liked this episode. Many, many funny scenes and some true bravery! I was very impressed with Teal'c who wouldn't leave O'Neill and Carter inside the ship, and with O'Neill who wouldn't leave Carter behind the force shield.

What I didn't quite get was what caused the force shields to come down? Was it the explosion? But shouldn't the explosion take out the entire ship - and kill everybody inside? And shouldn't that include O'Neill and Carter?

Or did I miss something?

Good episode, I especially enjoyed the comical dialog in the end between SG1 and Hammond - "Me too" "Me three" and then comes Teal'c with "I don't have to apologize". haha, I really laughed at that moment. I love these parts in the show.

Travellers fell out of the other side with a force because of imprecise calculations used in forming the wormhole. They had to make their own DHD (Dial Home Device) and as such it was imperfect.

It is a great and fun episode. Sometimes if I am in a more serious type mood, I have trouble enjoying the premise - they get superhero powers, but there is a huge issue. Doing something like typing extremely fast would quickly use up and damage Carter's cartilage in her fingers. Jack benchpressing 3-4 times his bodyweight would hurt his muscles, as would running that quickly. Unless the armbands give them tremendous and instant healing powers, that is possible but seems unlikely. They are not like someone like Superman, who is born an alien and has certain automatic physiological powers. That being said, part of me says, who cares, I just need some suspention of disbelief for this episode, some things I can suspend easily, some not, this one is harder, watching them do things that would destroy their muscles, but hopefully their armbands are working overtime!

That being said, it had its funny moments and was overall very entertaining. Though parts were comedic, to me the last scene was very serious, they got into a situation that required superpowers, and now they need to get out of it without those powers. This to me was very dramatic and set up a lot of tension - how do you solve something as a normal person that was so difficult that you 5 minutes ago required a superhuman ability to do? So the last scene with Jack and Sam was very tense to me.

As for their impared judgement, I thought it was extremely well done and well acted. After watching it a second time, they did a very good job with it, after all, they are not being mind controlled or anything, they just have very offkilter hormones, like a guy on too much steroids or something. They have always been confident, but they become arrogant to the point of being cocky, and do things on a whim and think about them later. When they do think about them, like the 2 seconds of 'wait a minute' at the resturaunt, their actions seem reasonable to them. They wanted steak so they got some steak. I can imagine them putting it on the 'Stargate' tab, that would be hilarious, they just ordered a $250 plus meal!!

Plus I loved seeing them eating at a resturaunt together as friends, they never get to do that. (The other time I remember them eating at a resturaunt one of the members get kidnapped. They must have a problem with eating at resturants.) Great show and very fun, like I said, I just have to suspend my disbelief and enjoy for this one.

What a fun episode! I especially like the team going out for steak and not really thinking about the consequences until they'd already left.

Wow, I'm the first one to post about this one for SGRewatch.

Anyways, a pretty good episode. And the introduction of the "Sexy Female Alien".

This one had 3 composers, who music was probably used in previous episode during the course of the series.

I wonder if with today's computers, would Sam have had that buffer problem. I highly doubt it, because with today's computers, we've got 6 cores per processor (at least on some processors).

Stuff from the commentary:

The wrapper in the can took 11 takes to get in it successfully. Mad Kenny (the props guy) threw it in at short range.
During the pool scene, Martin bet Amanda $100 (US) that she couldn't get the shot in with one shot. $100 during rehearsal, and another during actual shooting. She got it in with one shot, both times. They were planning on using a double for the scene.
That slow-mo staff blast was just a rock on a wire, with CG added later

Tomorrow, someone who Teal'c once loved comes by. And Peter Wingfield.

Another great episode! Another favourite of mine. Not many I didn't like in Season 4! :)

Just loved the whole gaining superpowers thing.

"With great power comes great responsibility." - Responsibility for eating loads of steaks, drinking lots of beer, being responsible when beating up the guys in the bar without killing them, and trying not to undermine the structure of Hammond's office when kicking the wall in frustration.

Jack and his 'Six Million Dollar Man' slow motion bit, had to be done, didn't it? LOL!

For those interested in where scenes are filmed:

The planet scenes were filmed in Burnaby Mountain Park, amongst the wooden carvings of 'The Playground of the Gods (http://www.vancouverobserver.com/localvocal/2011/03/30/playground-gods-burnaby-bc).'

'O'Mally's' was Horizons Restaurant in Burnaby Mountain Park. Unfortunately the restaurant had a fire in the kitchen last year, it has been refurbished and the interior and the entrance no longer look like they did in this episode.

It actually depends on what word processor she's using. I have a modern computer, but when I was using Open Office (before I went to the the Dark Side and got Word), I had horrible problems with overtyping the buffer, and I only type between 60 and 75 wpm.

This episode is like a roller coaster ride, and it’s needed after the heavier episode before this. Watching Jack, Daniel and Sam reacted to their new powers is fun. There is also great dialog:

(after Annise walks through the gate)
Daniel: that looks like trouble to me.
I liked seeing Daniel flirt with Annise, and Jack’s reaction to it.

After Jack knocks Teal’c out, there’s this cute interchange between Jack and Teal’c
Jack: Teal’c, I’m really sorry
Teal’c: You are not
Jack: He’s right about that

Sam: Has it occurred to anyone that we are defying a direct order?
(long pause)
Daniel: it’s not like we haven’t defied orders before
Sam: Yeah, but that was about saving Earth.
Jack: Earth, steaks—what’s the difference?

Daniel “taking on the big boys” in a fight

Questions, did they get to eat their food?
Did they use a “Vulcan pinch” to disable the control room personnel?

And last, if not least, the dialog after they return to the SGC:
Jack: Even so, General, I’m sorry
Sam: Me too
Daniel: Me three
Teal’c: I have no reason to apologize.

Love when Jack knocks Teal'c out...and then when he apologizes and says "I'm sorry." and Teal'c says very simply "You are not." ....his tone of voice and the look on his face is incredibly awesome!
I also love how Janet is on guard at all times and not so ecstatic about this whole thing...love the Janet vs Anise dynamic. Along with Teal'c, Janet pretty much pwns all and can do no wrong!

The whole scene with Hammond and Jack in his office is amazing. Hammond is a saint for dealing with all the weirdness every day...I love how Hammond nails Anise and knows this was all a set up. Sneaky Tok'Ra!

Love the interior of the ship, especially the power core, totally cool and very different from anything we've seen before. ah, Teal'c...feeling a little left out, I think. He deserved his moment at the end "I have no need to apologize." With his nose in the air, no less! hahahaha!

Ah Anise. The Stargate version of Seven of Nine. She never really had a huge purpose besides eye candy. What to say about this episode? Its purely action. While giving characters superpowers is hardly a new science fiction concept this is a new one. Its unfortunate that in modern microbiology the concept of a retrovirus doing this makes absolutely no sense. But to be fair Stargate ofter misses up medicine. I was also interested in seeing them destroy Apophis' new ship. I always felt this was a prototype to his big ship we see in the back half of S4 and why this unique hatak is never seen again. Most importantly this episode and season is where our trust and alliance with the Tok'ra starts to become shaky. I always liked that part of the show

I also loved the O'Malley's scene(s). I know they were hyped on adrenaline and not quite themselves, but from the ordering food, to the teasing look Sam gets about ordering a diet soda, to the "pool shark" moment, to Daniel taking offense at being called a geek and not letting it go this time, to the brawl...just nice off-base interaction (and again...I know they were not completely acting like themselves...but how many times in the show did we get to see them off of the base in a social setting?)

Love it! On to Divide and Conquer...

I just watched it. It is amazing how Sam's technical and scientific explanations makes everything seem so believable and realistic, aside from the right amount of humor. However, can anyone explain to me how a person is supposed to feel having a wiggly little or big snake attached to his spine?? Of course they come in different sizes. Jacob Carter's Salmak was a small guy, whereas the usual goa'ulds are pretty big, including Tealc's symbiote. But I just cannot fathom what it would be like having such a creature --- deemed to be an intelligent sentient being akin to a human -- tucked away in your back.......

One of the best lines in a season full of exceptional writing:
"I thought the devices were supposed to enhance them physically not make them stupid!"
Dear George.

Though a set up for later eps, there's no question this escape was primarily a soft landing following the opening. Though there were quite a few fun effects, it was the writing that made it more special. Janet getting on her high horse with Anise, Daniel trying to mimic Jack speed reading and Jack offering Daniel his candy bar, and poor Siler!
What fun!

It does show that the Tokra have some pretty loose ethics. They clearly knew about the downsides from the beginning, as well as what they planned to use the test for.

Although I have to say, it seems like we get some pretty different views of the Tokra throughout the series. In other instances, we see the Tokra as extremely honor-bound and willing to sacrifice anything for the cause. Oddly enough, the different facets of the Tokra seem to align with different Tokra individuals. Anise is usually manipulative and always has the sense that she has an ulterior motive. Martouf was always there when the Tokra were open and willing to assist the humans. Aldwin showed up when the Tokra were hellbent on doing something that wasn't quite ethically on the level (blowing up Netu, extracting info from a small child), but unlike Anise, never when hiding something.

Since we learn later that the Tokra aren't as internally united as they appeared to be, maybe this shows the disunity between different factions within the Tokra.

Or, more likely, it shows that different writers were at the helm during different stints during the series. So for a few episodes while Anise was around, the Tokra were manipulative and deceptive, led by a seductive little minx.

Not really my favorite episode - thought it was kind of silly, actually. It felt like it was supposed to be a funny comedy episode ("Let's give them all superpowers!") but halfway through the writing, they realized that it would completely screw up the entire overarching story unless they gave it a serious ending that would make sure the superpowers never came back into the canon. Overall, felt kind of silly and unoriginal.

A plot hole question: while I'm gonna set aside the myriad questions about how these superpowers could possibly work (how does a virus make a human body 5 times stronger in that short a time? how could the body possibly survive a moment of the strain of such activity? wouldn't the bones and tissue just completely shred apart? and so on), couldn't Apophis just build another one of these super-advanced ships? This ship is supposedly enough to change the balance of power to Apophis irrecoverably - wouldn't the fact that he can build it at all mean that it's already happened?

BTW, Anise? Not really that hot. There are significantly better choices among the Tokra.

One of the best, right here. Not only does it tackle the ethics of using alien technology which may be harmful, but it has so many darned funny lines!

:jack: "My name's Jack, it means....what's in the box?"

:sam: "I don't know about you guys, but I'm getting some serious protein cravings."
:jack: "Meat...big, juicy, red....meat...."
:sam: "O'Malley's, in town."
:jack: "Let's go."

Lots of great visual gags, too, like Jack kicking a chunk out of Hammond's wall and then accidentally pushing poor Siler down the stairs. And the bar fight...pure comedy gold!

And yes, Anise is....ew. I find it interesting her name is spelled like 'anise', which is a spice that tastes like licorice...no wonder I don't like her. ;)

Last but certainly not least, is our first glimpse of the changing relationship between Jack and Sam. :sam: :jack:

I love this episode, it's among my favourites.

I love the humour in this ep, there are so many funny lines / scenes..

One thing I wonder about.. They lost their superpowers relatively fast... Did the stuff Daniel read superfast stick in his head? I really hope so, I love the fact that what he wanted to do with his superpowers was to read! And what about Carter's book? Did she actually finish it while having the superpowers or did the computer issue prevent that? Even if she didn't finish it, she must have gotten pretty far with her writing, it should have been quite possible for her to be able to finish it even with her normal powers, but I guess we never heard about the book since...? (I'm in the beginning of S6 at the moment on my SG-1 marathon).

Anise and Dirrti Nirrti had the most epic clothing style ever in the show. However, Anise was even weirder, because she didn't really put any makeup on her mouth or eyes, and still hat this porn-like dressing. It was like "take me silently, I won't feel anything".

The episode overall was one of the best ever in the show. Along with "Window of Opportunity", this is another Season 4 standalone episode which made it into the overall highlights of all the show. When those Jaffa flew up into the air, it was like Asterix and Obelix fighting the Romans or Buddy Spencer and Terry Hill beating up some gangsters in a bar. :D

oh how I love this as a fun ep. Nice to see Sam in Civvies - but I do wonder what the costume department were thinking with the Anise/Freya outfit. (oh the poor actress, it made her boobs look lopsided)

Teal'c - fantastic stoic stuff from him. Nice teamwork, and Daniel, how cute was he - armbands that make you super fast etc and all he thought about was how much reading he would be able to do.

I did wonder why the smallish guy in the bar called Daniel, who wasn't wearing glasses and looks like a 6foot Canadian Ice Hockey player, a geek. That is something that SG-1 falls down on. At the beginning it was all baggy clothes and trying to at least cover up the fact that Michael Shanks is a big beefy guy whereas the Daniel from the film is a small skinny geek. I don't know why he suddenly started dressing normally - but it really didn't enhance the geek look.
(not that I'm complaining of course, it does make him very very easy on the eye)

I also quite liked that these armbands turned out to be useless, that the Tok'ra were a bit cavalier in their attitude towards testing them (as in: they didn't) and that ultimately they turned out to be useless. There's a moral to the story there but at the moment I can't think of it because I'm craving steak.

Fraiser has every right to use the big needles next time SG1 comes in for a medical evaluation... they deserve it. :p Except Teal'c - he's to be spared.

Ah, Anise/Freya... mmm... I kinda really like her. :D As far as Tok'ra go, she's definitely a fave of mine.

Not a bad episode, with some fun moments. The bar brawl comes to mind... :p

However, in theory Jack's armband should have been the one to fall off first since he was wearing it the longest.
And it was my understanding the forcefields were in place, and not on a rotation so how exactly did Teal'c managed to a) walk in, b) walk out with Daniel and c) suddenly there's a forcefield preventing him to go back in... where did that forcefield come from. Was the intruder alert activated already when he walked out?

Also the best scene ever in the history of Stargate, when Jack runs towards the forcefield in slow motion, and gets flattened by the forcefield. BRILLIANT!! :D

Ah, Anise/Freya... mmm... I kinda really like her. :D As far as Tok'ra go, she's definitely a fave of mine.
I like the character, I think the actress is fine (and certainly, she does her best with the material she was given) but I hate the way they dressed her.

how exactly did Teal'c managed to a) walk in, b) walk out with Daniel and c) suddenly there's a forcefield preventing him to go back in... where did that forcefield come from. Was the intruder alert activated already when he walked out?

As I understood it, only the core forcefields were on when they entered, so Teal'c could get in without a problem. By the time he tried to turn back, the intruder alert had gone on, yes. Probably (IMO), when the two Jaffa Daniel had taken out were discovered--but of course, we don't know about them, yet (no, I'm not going to put that in spoilers).

Anise's attire leaves much to be desired, yes. Though the brown leathery dress-thing she's wearing in this episode is far better than that beige thing they got her wearing in Crossroads.
