Ick!!! Don't support L Ron Hubbard

A banner ad at the top of the GateWorld site is an ad for an L Ron Hubbard book. I know that everyone has a right to his or her own opinion, but I certainly will not put a penny in any coffer that could possibly be linked to Hubbard or Scientology. The man admitted that he didn't like writing novels because it didn't make him enough money, and said "the best way to make a fortune is to invent a religion." And so he did! 'Pray for pay,' I call it.

Anyway, just a rant. Totally apropos of nothing.

This is SLANDER, I tell you! Now if you'll excuse me I need to go... audit... my... body thetans... or something.

Seriously, watching a TV show about parasitic aliens is one thing. Basing your religion on it is quite another.

Everyone is entitled to their own oppinion. If they're trying to hook people with the whole sci-fi basis (I use Firefox with Adblock so I never actually saw the banner), then thats just a tad sneeky. I'm not saying that I dont have any negative oppinions on the subject, I'd just rather not offend anyone.

On a similar note, has anyone here been to Hollywood? I was up there a few weeks back to go see Wicked (best musical ever) at the Pantages Theater, and we got there early so we decided to walk a few blocks down Hollywood Blvd. Within maybe 5 blocks, I saw four scientology groups, was offered a free personality test, was given free tickets to a "L. Ron Hubbard Life Memorial Museum" (located on that same block), saw a storefront used just to display posters advertising one of his books. It was.....different......

It's not a religion, it's a cult. At least, according to the definition I made up two minutes ago:

Religion - Where people will tell you how to behave in order to be saved / reach paradise / achieve enlightenment

Cult - As above, but they'll only tell you piecemeal, and only as long as you pay them a large percentage of your salary

I'm no fan of L. Ron Hubbard or Scientology, but I did enjoy reading his novel, "Battlefield Earth". I actually own his book on Scientology, but I never bothered to finish reading it. LOL I'm certainly in no danger of becoming a Scientologist... besides I don't have the money.

Yeah, I remember I was halfway through reading Battlefield Earth years ago, when it first came out, when I discovered the guy was head of this cult. I kind of enjoyed the book (well the first half anyway, then the plot took a turn that bored me), but was kind of thankful I'd borrowed it from the library and hadn't spent any cash on it.

The book was okay. But as for that movie with John Travolta in it.... <shudder>

Listen, we had General Ryan come on and do a little cameo for us, and he's a real live four star, one of the big guys. And I had to ask him point blank, because there's a certain irreverence that I bring to the character, and denseness, but while we were doing this scene, I just looked at him and said, "Do you have guys like me in...?" and he stopped me and said, "Yes, and worse, and you're doing a fine job, son."

Yep. I don't think Tom Cruise did a whole lot of good for Scientology with that outburst. If anything, he made them appear even more fanatical than people thought they were to begin with.

I have a sever panic disorder due to too little seritonin in my brain. A Scientologist told me I was to throw away the medications I take for it and live my life as it would be without the help. No way I am going back to the hell I was in before medical help. Nobody has the right to throw other peoples lives away.

I heard that an SG1 actor was a scientologist, but I may be wrong.

I don't really know much about it...

Certainly in most places it has no legal standing as a religion - i.e., the Church of Scientology has to pay taxes - because the governments of the world are filled with bad suppressive people and we'll all be laughing on the other side of our faces when the Despot Xenu invades.

Oh wait, I forgot; all that stuff about thetans isn't true; it has nothing to do with Scientology, isn't in any of the manuals and if you repeat it they'll sue you for breach of copyright.

And for the record, he's not even a good writer. I didn't much care for Battlefield Earth when I was in my 'any SF/Fantasy the library has' phase, although it is at least shorter than the Mission Earth decalogy.
