I know loads of pros, at least well enough to go to parties and drink unfeasibly large amounts of booze in convention bars with them.

I've been running SF conventions in the UK for years, you get to meet everyone. There are loads of fun stories - I nearly killed Ian Banks with a packet of chocolate vermicilli (chocolate sprinkles) he inhaled at the wrong moment, Chris Claremont offered me a ride in his jet (and fought an imaginary sword fight for my imginary honour) and Terry Pratchett acted out a fetish show for me on a couple of beer crates in the gopher room of the Dutch Worldcon. Pro writers are, to a man (or woman) nuts.

Had any encounters with the Stargate crew yet? MS, for example?

I just get to know professional people in Egyptology (I asked Vivian Davies, the curator of egyptology at the British Museum, for the loo once...before I knew who he was...) and, more recently, when i happen to present papers at conventions, I get to hang out with people (Lord of the Rings, for example)...and I did an interview with Alexis Cruz two weeks ago...

Nope, not contacts in media fandom (or very few, I know some Brit media fan conrunners). It sounds like name dropping but most British fans will have stories about Brit authors and artists, fan run conventions mean you get to really meet people without outside pressure and it always helps if you are running the convention too. I must admit, some of the names in my address book do make me proud but as I said, if you run SF cons, you get to meet all sorts of people.

My media connections are appalling (serious skiffy fan here, media fans are soooo beneath me... I don't follow that sort of fannish snobbery, a fan is a fan is a fan, if they are a fan of written sf, film, tv, anime, whatever, they are still a fan to me).

I was doing the cover art for a Trek con sometime in the 1980's - cool cover, Blackpool Tower as a rocket and "Oh I do want to be beside the sea side" in Klingon round the edge (fannish contact again, Peter Morwood had just finished a Trek book about Klingons so I called him and got him to look in the Kilngon/English dictionary for a translation, by phone, this was before email!!!).

They told me the guest was Q and I wondered what Desmond Llewellyn (the Q in the James Bond films) was doing going to a Trek con!
My only excuse is that Next Gen hadn't been on terrestrial TV in the UK at that time. Sigh, bit of a weak excuse.
The con committee didn't bother to disuade me from my misconception untill about a week before the con. Sods.
