With Steven Spielberg's new version of H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds, starring Tom Cruise, due in theaters on June 29, TCM considers our ongoing fascination with science fiction, a movie genre where the possible meets the improbable.
Tales of Alien Invasions flourished in the 1950s, when Cold War paranoia helped feed the public appetite for sci-fi menaces such as The Thing (1951), a bloodthirsty alien played by James Arness. Don Siegel's Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), with its alien "pods" that take on human appearance, symbolized the prevailing fear that America was being infiltrated by Communist agents who looked just like everyone else. Sci-fi Monster Movies of the period include The Blob (1958), with Steve McQueen making his starring debut in the story of gelatinous alien mass that terrorizes a small town.
Films focusing on Space Exploration include the much-loved Forbidden Planet (1956), a futuristic treatment of Shakespeare's The Tempest in which Walter Pidgeon has built an outer-space empire shared by Robby the Robot. Among Future Dystopias is Michael Crichton's Westworld (1973), an amusement park where robotic cowboys go berserk; while Friendly Aliens include those magical creatures who fascinate Richard Dreyfuss in Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977).
