There is (as I understand it) an ancient Sumerian legend that the royals, and priest partook of a precious metal substance that caused the people's lifespans to lengthen and their consciousness to expand. It is said that it even caused their eyes to change and glow. Does this sound familiar to you???
In Stargate, when someone is taken as a host, they have naquadah released into their blood slightly changing their body chemistry. They have increased lifespans and increased knowledge as a result of the blending. (although, technically, it is more like a living-death since they have no control over their own bodies.) Their eyes glow as well.
In Dune, when people take the Spice Melange, it increases health, extends life, and expands consciousness. As a side effect it also causes the eyes to change, into the blue-within-blue coloration.
Coincidence? Perhaps, but an interesting one, none the less...
