In that last scene, with only his look, Jack is asking Sam's understanding to back him up, coz for sure that incident won't be in the mission-report to Hammond / Pentagon, knowing full well that Earth govt will gives Alar amnesti and that Alien-Hitler could live a happy live on Earth/off-world :( Jack/RDA is just very good with these looks.

There's a lot of these 'knowing/asking/telling' looks in the earlier seasons between the team and they're defined, clearly & appropriately put at certain scenes, it's ... just teamy-goodness. I miss classic!SG-1 :(
You think he's asking for understanding? I think his saying this is who I'm truely am and take a good look at it. Sometimes the others play Jack as a fool. I think he does that to keep others guards down but it must get kind of tiredsome when your good friends don't see beyond those brown eyes. He couldn't have been so nice if he was in Black-Ops.

I agree. I think it was one of those "I did what needed to be done and I'm not apologizing for it" moments. I think Sam expected Alar to come through and for them to hold him prisoner or something. Notice how she had her gun ready to point at him.

What message do you think Jack was relaying to Sam when he shut the iris in "The Other Side"? I say, "This is the real me"!

Great discussion. I was interested by that look atthe end as well. It's one of those moments when Jack quits joking and becomes his intense self. You see that he really can be brutal when the situaiton calls for it.

I loved how Jack, even though he was talking to Hammond, kept his eyes right on Sam. The moment was between the two of them, no one else fully underrstood what had just ocurred. RDA and AT did a fantastic job of saying pages of dialogue with one exchange.

As for what he was really trying to say, I think Jack was simultaneously telling Carter that he allowed Alar to die and that he didn't care. Sam realized that, accepted it and continued. It not only supports the occasional reference to Jack's past work in the special forces being "damn distasteful", but it displays the dark, yet justice inspired, side of Jack's perosnality. The two have been through many harrowing experiences, but I think it is probably the first time Sam, and we as the audience, realized what Jack is capable of doing.

Speaking of Sam and Jack scenes, I particularly loved Jack in "Solitudes". He never gave up, even when he asked Sam to go on without him. He held out hope that he, and she, would survive. I also loved how RDA p[layed the splinting scene. Sam was clearly trying to distract Jack with questions, but he knew that. When he said "It hurt...just like that" I really felt for him!

It was just one more example of Jack's life affirming, death defying attitude that makes him a great character.

Love your signature! I agree there are scenes which make certain episodes and that scene made "The Other Side" such a powerful episode. It put the line in ground on how far Jack will go and he definitely let it be known he was pushed a little too far. He stood at the top of the gate as to dare anyone including General Hammond to make a comment. However, GH being a soldier that has probaly also had to do some distasteful things himself understood Jack 100%. But the look on Sam's face you can tell she's a scientist first and soldier second and has never had the demons on her back, as Jack has had, in his previous life. Great scene and great job by RDA and AT.

I'll also add to this, that Sam hasn't had the same military experience that Jack must have had at this point in his career (Major). I loved that episode because indeed, it showed another side of Jack as a military man. He's not only a great leader, he also knows how to make difficult decisions when required.
We saw another, softer version of this side in Endgame when Jack decides to wait a bit more for Daniel, Sam, and Teal'c to come back, losing the chance to anihilate the Trust in the process.

Jack will give up his life for his team. It's funny how they didn't invoke the frat regs. on his whole team. Lets face it, Jack has made decisions that could have been devastating to SGC and Earth becausce of his love for his team. Everyone is so worried about him sleeping with Sam but hasn't he gone one step past for Teal'c and Daniel when they were endanger. They are just having one love fest SG-1:o !

I agree wholeheartedly! The Frat regs have been broken time and time again because of the close relationship of the TEAM, not because of a possible attraction between Sam and Jack. The only difference is that both Daniel and Teal'c don't get military evaluations from Jack... :(

Thanks! Amber Moon did a great job with it.

You make some great points there. I agree that Sam is a scientist first, soldier second. She is a devoted USAF major, but she has not been on the same kind of missions, and has not been around as long as Jack. I remember in "Shades of Gray" when Jack retired (part of the ploy to draw out the NID) and SG-1 was looking for a new leader, Daniel argued for Sam, but Hammond stepped in and said "major is a far cry from colonel".

It also shows, and this interests me especially, that Jack has already encountered danger and evil almost on par with the Goa'uld. He never likes to talk about what he's done before. We only find out in bits and pieces. It could partially explain his pronounced skepticism.

The frat regs discussion is also quite interesting, does anyone know the specifics on those rules?

Thanks,
Royal

I have frat. regs on my computer. I wanted to read them for myself to know exactly what I'm stepping on when I write fanfiction.

Spoilers for length.

This instruction establishes command, supervisory and personal responsibilities for maintaining professional
relationships between Air Force members, between Air Force members and members of other uniformed
services, between Air Force members and civilian employees of the Department of Defense, to
include Air Force civilian employees, and between Air Force members and government contractor
employees. Unprofessional relationships are those interpersonal relationships that erode good order, discipline,
respect for authority, unit cohesion and, ultimately, mission accomplishment. It is the responsibility
of commanders and supervisors at all levels to ensure compliance with this instruction.
<snip>
1. General. Professional relationships are essential to the effective operation of all organizations, both
military and civilian, but the nature of the military mission requires absolute confidence in command and
an unhesitating adherence to orders that may result in inconvenience, hardships or, at times, injury or
death. This distinction makes the maintenance of professional relationships in the military more critical
than in civilian organizations. While personal relationships between Air Force members are normally
matters of individual choice and judgment, they become matters of official concern when they adversely
affect or have the reasonable potential to adversely affect the Air Force by eroding morale, good order,
discipline, respect for authority, unit cohesion or mission accomplishment. Professional relationships are
those interpersonal relationships consistent with Air Force core values: integrity first, service before self,
and excellence in all we do. Military members understand that the needs of the institution will sometimes
outweigh personal desires. This guidance focuses on the impact of personal relationships on the interests
of the Air Force as an institution. The guidance set forth in this instruction is based, in part, on the custom
against fraternization that has been a part of and enforced within the American military for over 200 years.
2. Policy.
2.1. Professional Relationships. Professional relationships are those that contribute to the effective
operation of the Air Force. The Air Force encourages personnel to communicate freely with their
superiors regarding their careers, performance, duties and missions. This type of communication
enhances morale and discipline and improves the operational environment while, at the same time,
preserving proper respect for authority and focus on the mission. Participation by members of all
grades in organizational activities, unit-sponsored events, intramural sports, chapel activities, community
welfare projects, youth programs and the like can enhance morale and contribute to unit cohesion.
2.2. Unprofessional Relationships. Relationships are unprofessional, whether pursued on or
off-duty, when they detract from the authority of superiors or result in, or reasonably create the
appearance of, favoritism, misuse of office or position, or the abandonment of organizational goals for
personal interests. Unprofessional relationships can exist between officers, between enlisted members,
between officers and enlisted members, and between military personnel and civilian employees
or contractor personnel. Fraternization is one form of unprofessional relationship and is a recognized
offense under Article 134 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).
2.2.1. Fraternization. Fraternization, as defined by the Manual for Courts-Martial, is a personal
relationship between an officer and an enlisted member that violates the customary bounds of
acceptable behavior in the Air Force and prejudices good order and discipline, discredits the
armed services, or operates to the personal disgrace or dishonor of the officer involved. The custom
recognizes that officers will not form personal relationships with enlisted members on terms
of military equality, whether on or off-duty. Although the custom originated in an all male military,
it is gender neutral. Fraternization can occur between males, between females and between
males and females. Because of the potential damage fraternization can do to morale, good order,
discipline, and unit cohesion, the President specifically provided for the offense of fraternization
in the Manual for Courts-Martial. (See Manual for Courts-Martial, 1998 Edition, Part IV, paragraphs
59 and 83 for a discussion of fraternization and the related offense of conduct unbecoming
an officer.)
3. General Guidelines for All Military Personnel for Avoiding Unprofessional Relationships,
Including Fraternization. Military experience has shown that certain kinds of personal relationships
present a high risk of becoming unprofessional. Personal relationships that are not initially unprofessional AFI36-
2909 1 MAY 1999 3
may become unprofessional when facts or circumstances change. For example, a close personal
relationship between officers or between enlisted members can easily become unprofessional if one member
becomes the commander, supervisor or rater of the other. Air Force members, both officer and
enlisted, must be sensitive to the formation of these personal relationships, as well as the possibility that
relationships that are not initially unprofessional may become so due to changed circumstances. The rules
regarding personal relationships must be somewhat elastic to accommodate differing conditions and operational
necessities; however, the underlying standard is that Air Force members are expected to avoid
those relationships that negatively affect morale, discipline, respect for authority and unit cohesion.
When economic constraints or operational requirements place senior and junior members in close proximity
with one another (such as combined ranks or joint use clubs, joint recreational facilities or mixed
officer/enlisted housing areas) military members are, nevertheless, expected to maintain professional relationships.
The mere fact that maintaining professional relationships may be more difficult under certain
circumstances does not relieve a member from the responsibility to maintain Air Force standards.
3.1. Relationships Within an Organization. Familiar relationships between members in which one
member exercises supervisory or command authority over the other can easily be or become unprofessional.
Similarly, differences in grade increase the risk that a relationship will be, or will be perceived
to be unprofessional, because senior members in military organizations normally exercise authority or
some direct or indirect organizational influence over the duties and careers of more junior members.
The danger for abuse of authority is always present. The ability of the senior member to influence,
directly or indirectly, assignments, promotion recommendations, duties, awards, and other privileges
and benefits, places both the senior member and the junior member in vulnerable positions. Once
established, such relationships do not go unnoticed by other members of a unit. Unprofessional relationships,
including fraternization, between members of different services, particularly in joint service
operations, can have the same impact on morale, discipline, respect for authority and unit cohesion, as
if the members were assigned to the same service, and must be avoided.
3.2. Relationships with Civilian Employees and Government Contractor Personnel. Civilian
employees and contractor personnel are an integral part of the Air Force. They contribute directly to
readiness and mission accomplishment. Consequently, military members of all grades must maintain
professional relationships with civilian employees and government contractor personnel, particularly
those whom they supervise or direct, and must avoid relationships that adversely affect or reasonably
can adversely affect morale, discipline and respect for authority or that violate law or regulation.
3.3. Dating and Close Friendships. Dating, courtship, and close friendships between men and
women are subject to the same policy considerations as are other relationships. Like any personal
relationship, they become matters of official concern when they adversely affect morale, discipline,
unit cohesion, respect for authority, or mission accomplishment. Members must recognize that these
relationships can adversely affect morale and discipline, even when the members are not in the same
chain of command or unit. The formation of such relationships between superiors and subordinates
within the same chain of command or supervision is prohibited because such relationships invariably
raise the perception of favoritism or misuse of position and erode morale, discipline and unit cohesion.
3.4. Shared Activities. Sharing living accommodations, vacations, transportation, and off-duty interests
on a frequent or recurring basis can be, or can reasonably be perceived to be, unprofessional.
These types of arrangements often lead to claims of abuse of position or favoritism. It is often the frequency
of these activities or the absence of any official purpose or organizational benefit which causes
them to become, or to be perceived to be, unprofessional. While an occasional round of golf, game of
4 AFI36-2909 1 MAY 1999
racquetball or similar activity between a supervisor and a subordinate could remain professional, daily
or weekly activities could result at a minimum in the perception of an unprofessional relationship.
Similarly, while it might be appropriate for a first sergeant to play golf with a different group of officers
from his or her organization each weekend, in order to get to know them better, playing with the
same officers every weekend might be, or reasonably be perceived to be, unprofessional.
<snip>

I think I hit most of the major ones.

I couldn't get it all on one post, so here's the rest of it! :D

5.1.3.1. Officer/Enlisted Marriages. When evidence of fraternization exists, the fact that an
officer and enlisted member subsequently marry does not preclude appropriate command
action based on the prior fraternization. The fact that an officer is married to an enlisted member
is not, by itself, evidence of misconduct. For example, some officer-enlisted marriages are
created by the commissioning of civilians married to enlisted members, or by the commissioning
of enlisted members married to other enlisted members. Other officer-enlisted marriages
may result from force reductions and nonselection for promotion of some officers who then
reverted to enlisted status. Regardless of how the officer-enlisted marriage came to be, married
members are expected to respect all customs and courtesies observed by members of different
grades when they are on duty, in uniform in public, or at official social functions.
6. Individual Responsibility To Maintain Professional Relationships. All military members share the
responsibility for maintaining professional relationships. However, the senior member (officer or
enlisted) in a personal relationship bears primary responsibility for maintaining the professionalism of
that relationship. Leadership requires the maturity and judgment to avoid relationships that undermine
respect for authority or impact negatively on morale, discipline, respect for authority, or the mission of the
Air Force. This is especially true of officers and noncommissioned officers who are expected to exhibit
the highest standards of professional conduct and to lead by example. The senior member in a relationship
is in the best position to appreciate the effect of that particular relationship on an organization and in
the best position to terminate or limit the extent of the relationship. However, all members should expect
to be and must be held accountable for the impact of their conduct on the Air Force as an institution.
7. Command and Supervisory Responsibilities. Commanders and supervisors at all levels have the
authority and the responsibility to maintain good order, discipline and morale within their units. They
may be held accountable for failing to act in appropriate cases.
AFI36-2909 1 MAY 1999 7
8. Actions in Response to Unprofessional Relationships. If a relationship is prohibited by this instruction
or is causing (or if good professional judgment and common sense indicate that a relationship may
reasonably result in) a degradation of morale, good order, discipline or unit cohesion, a commander or
supervisor should take corrective action. Action should normally be the least severe necessary to terminate
the unprofessional aspects of the relationship. The full spectrum of administrative actions is available
and should be considered. Administrative actions include, but are not limited to, counseling,
reprimand, creation of an unfavorable information file (UIF), removal from position, reassignment,
demotion, delay of or removal from a promotion list, adverse or referral comments in performance reports
and administrative separation. One or more complementary actions can be taken. Experience has shown
that counseling is often an effective first step in curtailing unprofessional relationships. More serious
cases may warrant administrative action or nonjudicial punishment. Referral of charges to a court-martial
is not appropriate except in aggravated cases. An order to terminate a relationship, or the offensive portion
of a relationship, can and should be given whenever it is apparent that lesser administrative action
may not be effective. Officers or enlisted members who violate such orders are subject to action under the
UCMJ for violation of the order. Instances of actual favoritism, partiality, or misuse of grade or position
may constitute independent violations of the UCMJ or the punitive provisions of the Joint Ethics Regulation.

It would take quite a while for the promotion to happen, so I don't think Jack promoted her to Lt. Colonel. General Hammond would have put the promotion through, perhaps on Jack's recommendation, although Jack was lucky enough to be the person to announce it and do the ceremony.

The situation is that the SG units are unlike whats found on Earth. To expect the Frat Reg not to be broken is crazy since these individuals are thrown in places and experiences outside the real world. New regs need to be drawn up to include the new off planet situations and how they affect the individuals in the SG units.

I agree with you. I also hate the way the regs are always used to keep Sam and Jack apart but are ignored for everything else that happens in the SGC.
All I meant in my previous post is that I don't think that Jack would have been able to promote Sam because it takes time for the promotion to go through, and he'd just become a General.

Nice! Thanks for posting all of that. It's very interesting. I've only had a vague understanding about military regs, or USAF regs. I'm surprised how restrictive they are. I wonder if they are ever entirely adhered to in reality. That would be an interesting study in and of itself.

I think Jack is quite professional with everyone, yet close. In a tense situation everything is all business. I think the episode "Proving Ground" showed quite nicely the way O'neill thinks through a scenario. He's tough, but is understanding and, of course, has a great sense of humor. I think O'neill's obvious devotion to the USAF, it's codes and ethics balanced with his devotion to his team, and human life in general, is one of the reasons the USAF honored RDA with the honorary brigadier general title. He does a fabulous job portraying those qualities.

Great discussion here, later,

I'll bite lol. I think Jack is comfortble encouraging people and showing his emotion at certain times. He is always ready to comfort others "Need" is a great example as is "Fire and Water". He wants to help other people a great deal, but he doesn't like to accept help or comfort. He almost never talks about his son's death (which still devastates me no matter when it's mentioned) or about his past injuries/misisons. He bears both emotional and physical pain very stoically. It highlights the seemingly contradictory aspect of his personality. "Fire and Water" , again, is an example of this. He comforts Sam, but he is consumed by what he believes to be personal failure. He can tolerate mistakes in everyone but himself.

That reminds me of one of my fave early Jack scenes. In "In the Line Of Duty" when the Jloinear-Sam yells "Jack please help me" you can see O'neill physically fighting the urge to help her and ram his fist into the door. His anger at himself and the circumstances that allowed it to happen make him explode.

When he hugs Sam or puts his hand on the side of the face of Daniel or Teal'c to show his support or friendship you can see the gentle side of Jack, who understands the pain or misgivings since he has experienced it 5 times before himself.

Watched Lockdown last night. I forgot how great of an episode it was! :D

Here's one of my favorite scene:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/SammySue/Lockdown/th_cap127.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/SammySue/Lockdown/cap127.jpg)
Danny wondering who shot him . . .
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/SammySue/Lockdown/th_cap146.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/SammySue/Lockdown/cap146.jpg)
Carter glances at O'Neill
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/SammySue/Lockdown/th_cap133.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/SammySue/Lockdown/cap133.jpg)
Danny's not going to get an answer from Teal'c (but for the slight slant of his head)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/SammySue/Lockdown/th_cap147.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/SammySue/Lockdown/cap147.jpg)
Jack glances at Carter . . .
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/SammySue/Lockdown/th_cap148.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/SammySue/Lockdown/cap148.jpg)
. . . then glances at Teal'c
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/SammySue/Lockdown/th_cap139.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/SammySue/Lockdown/cap139.jpg)
Finally he admits to the shooting when he realizes no one's going to step up.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/SammySue/Lockdown/th_cap140.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/SammySue/Lockdown/cap140.jpg)
Can't believe Jack really shot him.

I also love the opening sequence where we see Jack at his desk. See? He does know how to do paperwork. :D

I love the glasses! I love the glasses! He did the same thing at Avalon and he so cute with them on! He wears them on the tip of his nose and when he talks he looks above them to look at you. Not allowed to have a camera at the table so I couldn't get a photo of it-rats!

Since I see a close similarity between RDA's and Jack's personalities maybe he wouldn't be nervous in a informal setting, like at home or at his cabin. You have to take out the contacts sometime and supposely RDA is very near sighted so he must wear contacts on the show. Does anyone know? That would be funny if he didn't wear contacts because he wouldn't be able to see past a few feet in front of him and I know how that feels:S

RDA had lazer surgery for nearsightedness years ago but unfortunatly you still need the reading glasses.

Question of the day? Which episode IYO showed the best and worst of Jack's personality?

Best of Jack's personality - there's so many! I'm sure there are better ones out there, but one leaps to mind. "Spirits" in S2. He goes against, his government that he's sworn to, his own feelings over what's best for Earth, and why? To do the right thing. He protects the Native American folk and he's all for being honest. He even suggests the way to make sure that his own people act with integrity by suggesting that the aliens bury their Gate. he acts against every military instinct because he's protecting them.

Worst - "Scorched Earth". he dismisses Daniel's opinions out of hand, he acts without consulting his team, really, then it comes back to bite him. And he closed the iris on that guy. How better do you see the ex-Special Ops man who would've probably killed in cold blood?

But one episode covering one of them? Pass...

nell
January 2nd, 2007, 05:43 AM
There are times when I didn't much like Jack due to his sharp, biting tirades. He is not a man to cross. I don't remember the episode titles but it frequently was aimed at Daniel. They are often polar opposites in their attitudes about people although they both value freedom, trust, and honor. Daniel is quick to accept folks on face value while Jack has a cynicism born from his Special Ops experiences. Daniel and Jack clash but they have both been willing to apologize to each other. They have an interesting friendship.

Paradise Lost

i love the way it shows his incredible intelligence -- his ability to survive, his deductive reasoning, resourcefulness, keeping it together in the worst of times, incredible patience, his compassion for Harry in the end ....

i love the whole Jack/Maybourne relationship Harry brings out some of the best Jack moments IMO!!!

So not fair!

I'll have to say The Other Side. Jack was ready and able to trade for those cool remote controlled planes. Then he started to see exactly how they treated someone who was different than them. Then had the iris closed. It had to be done, no matter the cost.

In one episode, I agree with C7, The Other Side
In seperate episode, the best is Lost City hands down, the worst ... that's hard.. I kinda like Jack, so it's really hard for me to be fair :P, I'd say I don't like his casual attitude in The Curse (the fishing in the pond) he casually hang-up a 'serious' phone call from Daniel.

trupi
January 2nd, 2007, 03:34 PM
I see the best of Jack in Lost City, he knew he had to be the one and stepped up to the plate when he knew it could be his last! His worst was "The Other Side" not when he closed the iris on the minister( he deserved that) but when he was being nasty to Daniel. Jack didn't see the truth until Teal'c was being dissed then he realized he was being played.

Pass...

Ya know what? I never watched this episode! Thanks for the review!

Best Jack--Learning Curve. I told the gals in the RDA/Jack Thunk Thread that it was the first Stargate episode I saw, and I fell in love with Jack and RDA all over again! I love how he's willing to take some risks in his career just so a little girl can learn how to be a child.

Worst Jack--The Other Side. He was too stubborn and hard on Daniel, refusing to listen to him when he turned out to be right. Also, the iris scene where he kills the guy--I know that guy had it coming in a way, because he was essentially a Nazi--but Jack sounds so cold and almost scary when he orders the iris to be closed.

Still, I love how Jack is willing to make the tough decisions, popular or not. :jack:

Ahem... in The Other Side, I personally don't blame Jack on being harsh on Daniel... (like I said, I like him too much :o)

I look at that episode in connection with other episodes before that & chalk that up for Jack being too tired to dig deeper, after so many mission ended up with SG-1 being hurt/injured, so these 'nice & needy' people offering an ideal weapon is like an oasis in the desert, I think that was one of Jack's weak moments, when he's just feel too tired to think anymore, no wonder he's grumpy & wants to wrap up the mission as soon as possible.

For the snarky part at Daniel,... Daniel was kinda pushy too, he doesn't really think about Jack authority and since they were in alien military ground where authority is important, I think Daniel should be more aware of Jack's status as their CO. *shrug* that's what I feel about that, what do you think ? :P

I think I agree with you on that. It wasn't Daniel's best moment, either. Whether one likes the military or not, it's not a good thing to undermine your leader's authority in front of other people - especially on an alien planet when negotiations are ongoing. Daniel should have spoken to Jack in private and voiced his concerns; the writers could have written it that way.

Personally, I kind of didn't like Jack's behavior in "A Matter of Time." I think he was a bit too harsh on Cromwell - it was't as if the guy left him behind on purpose or out of cowardice. He made the wrong judgment call.

RDA had lazer surgery for nearsightedness years ago but unfortunatly you still need the reading glasses.
Yup... I did the same and I've got a 10year window without glasses before I have to wear the reading ones.... It's still 10 years! :D

Seriously, and bit OT, anyone who is nearsighted and elligible for the operation, do it, I discover things I'd never seen before!!! LOL

I agree, L-Jade, that his behavior in The Other Side is more like a weak moment than an absolutely worst moment. I guess I just have a hard time picking a bad Jack moment, because I like the guy so much! :jack: ;) And, yes, slightly off-topic...Daniel was undermining his authority and was a little pushy and whiny himself. Not that I dislike Daniel or anything, but he also has the propensity to be a little arrogant (one of his worst moments was calling Jack a stupid S.O.B. in Menace). But, I digress...;)

Daniel can get a bit self righteous can't he? Like when they go back to talk to Hammond and Sam says "It's a fair question." And Daniel says "yes, it is." That always annoyed me. You're point's been made, no need to congratulate yourself. As far as Jack, yes, he wanted the weapons & Hammond ordered him to try to get them, but usually he's quicker to spot a phony than he was in that episode.

Personally, I kind of didn't like Jack's behavior in "A Matter of Time." I think he was a bit too harsh on Cromwell - it was't as if the guy left him behind on purpose or out of cowardice. He made the wrong judgment call.

I think he had been assuming he'd been left for so long that he didn't stop to think about it from Cromwell's side. But he did get the message when Cromwell pointed out it was just like with the SG team on the planet. What I liked was that there was no big "I forgive you scene" but you could see that Jack "got it"--RDA's fairly subtle look-- and then of course they were heroic together at the end & so Cromwell was redeemed.

I just thought of another great Jack moment--Scorched Earth. It was on tonight, and again I admired how much Jack struggled to find the right solution to something that didn't have a straight answer. He was once again showing a very human side to an ethical dilemma, and he was doing his best. Daniel did well, too. Actually, I think that's a great team best moment. :jack:

Question of the day? Which episode IYO showed the best and worst of Jack's personality?

"ABYSS" (ahem, anyone who knows me, know its my Favorite episode!)

Its shows that Jack is willing to fight to get out, but will also die to get out also!! And that the Team is willing to do anything for each of the team!! No one gets left behind!!
It also showed the best Acting from RDA and MS together!!

Woohoo! Spirits is one of my favourite episodes. I don't think it is an episode that the cast particularly likes but I do. For me it is one of the first episodes we got to see Jack O'Neill' putting a personal belief ahead of military/Earths gain. :)

The Other Side is another favourite of mine showing both sides of Jack's personality.

He does lose it with Daniel (which was a long time coming and deserved IMO) and he did close the iris on Alar which would be the worst side.

On the positive side he does help fight off the attack before he realizes what is going on; which is one of his best personality traits, wanting to help others be it allies, team members, children, etc. He also realizes that he has made a mistake, apologizes to Daniel, and tries to correct it by making the two warring sides even again.

Oh, yes! Beneath the Surface! Another great Jack moment--I love when he shoots out the ceiling so that the "workers" can see what an illusion they've been living under--my favorite part of that episode (well, besides Jack being scruffy, of course. ;) ).

And yes--Abyss may just be my favorite episode, too!

Talk about feel Jack's pain episode. Still have problems watching that episode and I think Jack acted pretty calmly when he meets Ba'al years later. That creature still gives me the creeps. Pure evil!

I think they've "de-fanged" Ba'al too much lately though. :jack:

I agree that Ba'al is the most intriguing Goa'uld & Cliff Simon is so very good at being evil & bad upto season 8 that is, season 9/10, he's more campy than scary, so... uh! NOPE! :baal10: :jack_new_anime25:

Ahem... in The Other Side, I personally don't blame Jack on being harsh on Daniel...

You really need to read Karen Miller's Alliances from Fandemonium. It covers the Eurondan aftermath very well and actually takes some of your points. You should definitely give it a read.

I like Cliff Simon but the way they transformed Ba'al from this horrible very smart creature to this doppie I can't figure out of the forcefield, I like power bars in season 10 is too much of a dramatic change IMO. In the back of my mind, no matter how charming TPTB have made his character now, he still the creature that tortured Jack and I can never feel comfortable with Ba'al's interaction with SG-1. Never had this feeling with Apophis's character.

After that talk with Jack, maybe Daniel re-thinks his view about ascencion, which led him to Full Circle.

Great observation! I definitely think Daniel started to realize that everything wasn't quite rosie on the Ancients side of the fence. The Ancients need someone like Jack to fight off the Ori and make them smell the roses. If Jack's ever became a Ancient he would be the only one who still has his Ba'als to do anything! :o

We're discussing 2010 in the S&J thread for Shippyness. But, I hurried over here because this is also an excellent Jack episode. RDA (mini-THUNK moment) plays the deeply hurt and bitter reclusive Jack (scruffy Jack:P ) so well! But, Jack can always set aside the issues in order to rise to the occasion (mind out of gutter) and lead the mission to save the world! **Did I say that outloud?**:D

Okay, I agree about the "Doppie" version of Ba'al in Season 10, but um, did the Doppiness for Baal start in Season 8 already when Jack was a General.

Look at "Zero Hour"
O'NEILL
So, why don't you just send her on through. Before you know it you'll have ole camelass back in your grubby little mitts.

BA'AL
You dare mock me.

O'NEILL
Ba'al, come on. You should know. Of course I dare mock you.
(thanks to StargateWikki for Transcripts)

and then in Reckoning when Ba'al is left waiting for Oneill.. (almost fell off my couch when I saw that part!!)

We all know that Jack has no respect for Ba'al whatsoever, and treats him like dirt.. but you think when seeing Ba'al for the first time since "ABYSS" Jack would have been a little more upset or doesn't show it, cuz he is more worried about his Team Members then about himself. I don't know, I am just wondering??

on a Serious note.. The Best line of Zero Hour was not from Jack (ducking) but from
REYNOLDS
(quietly, with feeling)
General O'Neill was once captured by Ba'al. He was tortured, killed, and brought back to life using a sarcophagus more times than you would care to imagine. SG-1 never gave up then, and General O'Neill won't now. There isn't a man or woman on this base that would.
(thanks to StargateWikki for Transcripts)

But I agree.. We need some kind of closure between Ba'al and Jack.. it would be nice!!

I love that scene with Reynolds because he says it with such feeling. Then later on Jack goes to the gate room and everyone is there to show their support. I always felt a little disappointed that we don't often see how well respected Jack is by his fellow officers. We see it with Sam and Daniel since they're always figuring everything out, but not so much with Jack. I really enjoyed seeing him get the up close and personal respect he deserves.

the reynolds scene was awesome -- but i loved the mock scene too -- it is so Jack and his smug way of dismissing Ba'al like he is of no significance and their earlier experience was nonconsequential ... his quiet sweet revenge of sorts!!

Very Cool!!!

and was thinking on ep where Jack was both ugly (*sigh* never) and beautiful .... 2010 when Sam comes to see him at his cabin .... he is so chewing sour grapes -- has become a bitter recluse ... he so slams her and everybody (though they all deserved it) not like him to let it show in such an ugly fashion ... but then the real jack comes out when he comes to the rescue and puts his life on the line to save the world in his usual fashion.

I don't know if this counts, but another bad Jack/good Jack moment for me is Shades of Gray. I know he's acting so that he can fulfill his undercover mission of rooting out the technology thieves among the SGC, but he says some pretty nasty stuff to the team, such as telling Daniel to shut up in a gruff, harsh voice and telling Sam that ever since he met her he hadn't been acting like himself--"Now, I'm acting like myself." There's a lot of hostility and tension in his scene with Daniel later at his house, too. Being more disrespectful to Hammond than usual and stealing the Tollan's technology really surprised me the first time I saw this episode! I thought Jack had gone completely wacko! The good side of Jack in this episode is obvious, though--he cleverly catches the bad guys! :jack:

I don't know if it's old because he said he was building a house in Malibou at Avalon. He said he's helping out with the construction and that he was trying to make it as environmental as possible. Could it be a refurb. maybe but I didn't get that feel from his conversation. But the fires were real scary and they are having some real dry conditions out by that area.

A wall fetish....dare I ask?????? :jack:
There was a question (I guess by Kliggins) at the tea/coffee session about his house, and he kept saying that the British architecture had given him ideas about the walls he wanted to build for his new house and kept rambling on about it before stopping abruptly, obviously realizing that he was rambling. So seeing that this was going to be a "blank" moment, I looked at him and asked:
"So you have a wall fetish?" to which he replied "what?" and Amanda smiled and mouthed "yes, he has a wall fetish"... To which we all laughed...

RDA on recent fires in Malibu at www.rdanderson.com
Following the fire that claimed several homes in Malibu two days ago, Richard wrote to reassure fans that he and his family were safe.

January 10, 2007

It was all an odd spectacle; sad, in many ways, but ultimately not a tragedy. No one died.

I was about 15 miles north and west of the first flames, riding home after a jaunt to Santa Barbara (on the new bike -- BMW R1200GS) when I saw the first "wisps" of new-mown smoke. I say "wisps" because the wind that day allowed for nothing more than horizontal discoloration near the ground.

My houses were in no danger at all of being affected, primarily because of the wind that would gust up to nearly 60 mph, but generally kept a hefty pace all day. (Incidentally: I had absolutely no business being on a motorcycle that day -- quite a humbling experience.)

I'll try to add to this later, but I must gather in Wylie from school. The bottom line to the fire thing: I am fine, not quite dandy, but certainly, fine. As is my family, dogs included.

January 11th, 2007, 11:50 AM
There was a question (I guess by Kliggins) at the tea/coffee session about his house, and he kept saying that the British architecture had given him ideas about the walls he wanted to build for his new house and kept rambling on about it before stopping abruptly, obviously realizing that he was rambling. So seeing that this was going to be a "blank" moment, I looked at him and asked:
"So you have a wall fetish?" to which he replied "what?" and Amanda smiled and mouthed "yes, he has a wall fetish"... To which we all laughed...

He did ramble a bit, didn't he? :p He did raze his old house and is building a new one from scratch. :)Totally forgot about fires; wished I had asked if he was using fire retardant materials too.

I agree Jack, Daniel, Sam and Teal'c ARE SG-1 ! without any of them there wouldn't be SG-1 ten years ago... that said, without any of them, SG-1 feels different, works different vibe too... this being Jack thread or not, I can't just dismissed that. But you got to agree, Jack is a big part of SG-1, when he left, he took a big chunks, that so hard to fill. :jack:

I love that too. I also thought he was great in the one where Nirti had the gene splicing machine (the episode title escapes me). He was very subtle in the scene where Carter has been hauled off & the Russian asks where she is. He just has an intense look on his face. And when the mutant guy kills Niriti and he says "Why did you do that? It was Carter's only chance." Very intense. I'm not a shipper so I just interpret it as concern for a very good friend, as all the team is.

I just saw an Avalon pic of mine (a close up of Rick) included without permission into fanmade artwork.
Let it be known that I consider this a big No-no (to put it mildly) and that I do not authorize the use of my private pictures for artwork or other public publication.
These pictures are there to enjoy, yes; grab and save on your HD for your own enjoyment, yes; post someplace/someway else NO.
Thanks for your understanding.

Yeh Kinsey is pretty crappie!;)

or crappy. ;) Not to be confused with the fish, the crappie, which Jack fishes for in Minnesota (which are very tasty eating, by the way). :) Anyone remember which episode he mentions them in? Nemesis maybe?

Yeppers! We have Crappie here which I used to catch, clean and eat as a teen.. Caught from our local resevoir lake, Loch Raven. They are delicious and put up a good fight when on the line:)

The Curse
"Come on. Are you really trying to tell me you'd rather work in a dark, dank, dismal underground than sit on a dock with your feet perched up, sippin' a cold one, and casting for that ever elusive crappie?"

He's asking Sam (again) to go fishing and when she refuses (again) he turns on Teal'c.

Love this part in the episode. Jack is describing the Asgards here.
"I'm not kidding you folks. This little fellow is about 3 feet tall, got clammy grey skin, big black eyes, and skinny, tiny little arms and legs, like toothpicks."

And also this scene, when Jack gets it right!
JACK: I thought when something was IN a wormhole, it existed only as ... energy. That you needed another stargate to turn it back into solid matter.
SAM: Actually, you absolutely correct, Sir.
JACK: (Seconds later, amazed) I AM?!
SAM: Yes! (Smiles) You see? It's the stargate on the other side that actually reintegrates the matter (Jack looks back at Hammond a HUGE grin on his face) into it's pre organized form. (Jack can't stop smiling) Without it the energy in the wormhole would not rematerialize in it's base form. Now, in the case of a person, that would be very bad, but in the case of an element, it shouldn't be a problem.
JACK: (Still smiling) (To Hammond) I was right!

Probably also thinking that he must have rocks in his head for taking that job. He is so bored but is faithful to his command, willing to do a job he was never meant to do. He knows they could put a pinhead in command endangering his friends and the SGC. How many individuals would do that? Jack justs keeps on sacrificing......why I love the character!:jack_new_anime07:

Angry Jack... In Red Sky after the explosion and he attacks the local guy, Malchus. First he bulldozes the guy then he punches him HARD in the face then he pulls out the gun. Oh yeah, Jack was upset.

I work in a group home from Developmentally Challenged people, and we were watching this episode, and the young lady who doesn't speak much, and likes Jack by the way (she smiles every time she hears the opening credits) suddenly out of the blue yells "Be nice Jack" to the T.V. screen during this part of the episode!!

You would have never thought that Stargate would be a helpful teaching tool eh!!

P.S. I got all the questions right on night on Ancient Egypt on Jeapardy thanks to Stargate :)
