Thanks, hlndncr, for that little bit of info on Jack and his family. Is everything in the SG1 Illustrated Companion books canon? I have never read them and have only seen snippets posted on GW (which I enjoy).
Personally, I don't consider anything that is not shown on screen as cannon. But the books are authorized, which means they've been reviewed by TPTB and so don't contradict cannon (or at least didn't when they were published; sometimes TPTB are a little schizophrenic).

So I was comparing the two versions of Children of the Gods. (Not for the first time.) I'm still trying to decide which I like better. There are things about both of them I like and things I would change.
What I did notice was that there are a lot more close ups and reaction shots in CotG recut. There is also better pacing (including a much tighter battle scene) and Teal'c is better characterized (for the most part; I do have a couple of quibbles there). They also updated many of the effects, which was nice. (BW said he originally recut the movie because he hated the way it was originally scored, but I'm not much of a music person. I notice it when it's not there, but even trying to pay attention the difference in the music really didn't strike me.)
In terms of Jack's character; I think it is a great introduction. I say that because he's clearly very different from the Jack we see in the original movie. At first I thought the character change might be too abrupt, but as I watched this time I really felt that he still had some of the hard edges and irreverence for authority that was portrayed in the movie. He was not particularly respectful to Hammond and he was downright rude to Simmons (which shows he is an excellent judge of character). You can definitely see that the trust and respect Hammond later has in Jack still has a few hurdles to overcome. And I'm really glad RDA changed the character as much as he did. I could not have watched the Kurt Russell character for very long without getting bored or annoyed (a two hour movie was about my limit).
In the commentary (which is done by RDA and Brad Wright; so definitely worth a listen) RDA points out that he was always slapping people on the shoulder at the beginning of the show. Eventually MS got so annoyed with it he pulled away when RDA tried to do it. I thought that was funny and I did notice quite a bit of shoulder slapping after that.
A couple of things that they cut in the newer version that I thought hurt Jack's characterization a little was in the briefing room scene, on the ramp with Sam going through the Stargate for the first time, and in the prison on Chulak just before Teal'c turns and helps the team escape.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm extremely grateful to Brad for cutting the horrible reproductive organs line from the briefing room scene that was rightly mocked in later episodes, but I think he went to far. The scene was so truncated that Jack's declaration that he likes women (but has a problem with scientists) just feels very abrupt and almost out of place.
Same thing with the scene on the ramp. The cutting of some of the banter between Jack and Sam leading up to the gate and most of Sam's fangurling at the event horizon made him pushing her through the gate seem more spiteful and mean rather than the good natured and playful gesture that I think it really was.
But then again, these actions do make Jack seem a little bit more like the tough guy he was in the movie, and help smooth the morphing of these two versions of the same character. But I still missed some of those moments.
In the prison scene, there is a pivotal moment for both Jack and Teal'c that I don't think BW should have taken out. In the original, when Daniel asks what would happen if they chose him and he declares, "Something of the host must survive" the scene cuts to Jack looking at Teal'c in the foreground who is looking down and shaking his head almost regretfully. I think this is one of the moments that helps Jack realize that his plea to Teal'c for help to saving these people would not be brushed aside. While most of the CotG recut gives us a better look into Teal'c's inner conflict over serving the Goa'uld, this moment from the original gives us the connection between Teal'c's state of mind and Jack, which leads Teal'c to his ultimate fate.
So any thoughts on this ep and Jack's character/role in it anyone?

I was reading on AOL about ways to use beer and this was one of them:
Tenderize a T-Bone
Firing up the grill? If you find yourself with a tough cut of meat for a barbecue, marinate it for an hour or so in some beer. The beer will infuse the meat with flavor and tenderize it while it sits, so it will cook up nice and juicy.
Jack did know what he was doing!:D

Jack was right about his secret ingredient for omelets!!! Here's one version...
How to make a fluffy beer omelete
beat eggs, butter and beer together.
heat pan to medium, then dump the wet mix in.
when the bottom starts to cook, add tomato & mushrooms, covering only a semicircle.
when the bottom is rather cooked, carefully fold the uncovered flap over the topping.
leave it to cook a bit more, then gently flip the omelet over.
remove when it has cooked as you like it.

My BFF and I have discussed it and we both think that for everything they improved (e.g., Teal'c's motivations) they made another thing worse (e.g., eliminating the look Jack & Teal'c exchanged). As for Jack's character, I thought he was well portrayed the first time as someone stuck between who he was and who he was going to be. Retiring at 38 (or 40, or 42, depending on your view of his age) gave him a lot of time to think.

I missed the "We had to macgyver two super computers..." lines :( I wish BW didn't cut that line off.
and agree with Hlndcnr, losing the banter between Sam & Jack before he shoved her thru makes Jack a mean Colonel :P but I like the additional beer-scenes between Jack & Daniel.
And the rest are OK with me... I'm easy when it comes to SG-1 :D

So, if I wanted to start a discussion of Jack's advanced degree, would this be where to do it?
Personally, I think he has a bachelor's in civil engineering (from 1974--before computers :D) and a master's in history. He wrote his thesis on covert operations during the American civil war.

I read that too, which is why I gave him a bachelor's in civil engineering. Knowing something about how bridges go up might help in bringing them down. AFAIK, there is no generic "engineering" degree and back in 1974 I believe there were three main engineering degrees--ME, EE & CE (my brother is an EE who got his degree in 1974).

Good thought. Just out of curiosity, since we can't seem to set a date for Jack's birth, what makes you think he graduated in '74? And a more general question to everybody: we all accept he has a degree. So what does everybody think: did he go get it right from high school, or did he work for awhile and then go get it maybe while he was in the AF?

This is the right place to start discussions about Jack! It makes sense to me that he had an advanced engineering degree. Remember in Fragile Balance mini-Jack bumped Carter from the lecture to the pilots and if you recall the content of the lecture it was technical. Just sayin'.

This goes back to the "on Jack's office wall" bit. There was apparently a certificate for academic merit from the Air Force Academy and a degree dated 1974 in "engineering" (a general degree that the AFA apparently didn't really grant).
As I understand it, whenever he entered the military, he could not have risen to the rank he did without both a bachelor's and an advanced degree.
Besides, in both of RDA's major shows, the main character's birth year has gradually approached his.

First he would let it all hang out but only in front of SG1 and then he would find a way to bring Hammond down and down hard (with help from SG1).

I believe that Jack would think that Hammond had been brainwashed and would try to cure him of that with Teal'c and Bratac's help. Those darn slimey snakeheads. And if that didn't work, do what Trupi suggested.

I'm going through Season 1 episodes looking at significant charater development moments for Jack. I just watched The Enemy Within. As only the second episode, I think is an interesting one for establishing several of Jack's relationships within the show.
First we have Jack and Teal'c, where there is an instant bond. Jack says he saw Teal'c stand up to his god and make the decision not to kill and that is all he needs to know. The entire time Jack is solidly on Teal'c's side and standing up for him at every turn.
Next we see the relationship between General Hammond and Jack is still in its early stages. Hammond is still trying to get a handle on Jack and assert his authority (like when he deliberately gives Kawalsky's team the planet Jack said he wanted to go to). I also get the feeling Hammond's seen officers like Jack before and he knows how to handle them. I think Jack is coming to respect Hammond, but still doesn't quite trust him yet; so he continues to keep him at arms length. In a scene in Hammond's office we have him noting for the second time that Jack is coming in and getting right down to business, and Jack's flippant attempt at small talk is obviously just a way to satify his superior officer (while still maintaining his aloofness and demonstrating his independent streak).
Finally, we have Jack and Kawalsky. Now this may seem like a much less significant relationship because Kawalsky dies in this episode and he only comes back a few more times (only in sci-fi can you write something like that and have it make sense ;) ). But I like to compare this relationship to the Jack/Daniel relationship we see going forward because in a sense Daniel replaces Kawalsky as that friend and colleague. Obviously Kawalsky and Daniel are two very different men and their friendships with Jack differ too. But, for me it felt like something of a natural progression because we have Jack and Kawalsky serving together for many years (as we later discover), then all three men are together on the first missions through the stargate, and Jack and Daniel go on to serve together for many years.
I also think it is interesting that we have somewhat congruous deathbed scenes in Enemy Within and Meridian.
http://i1012.photobucket.com/albums/af243/hlndncr/PDVD_075.jpg
With Kawalsky, Jack can't bring himself to actually discuss what's happening to his friend. So he turns to one of his standard avoidance tactics and makes a bad joke (Can I have your stereo?).
http://i1012.photobucket.com/albums/af243/hlndncr/PDVD_014.jpg
With Daniel, Jack admits that he is still bad at this kind of thing, but he is able to tell his friend (with some prevarication) how much he has come to admire him. I think this demonstrates both a deeper bond and a greater depth of character that Jack has developed in the ensuing years.

Just a quickie :P
First I need to say that I absolutely love Kowalsky. I wish he stayed around. He was a great character and I loved his friendship with Jack.
I don't, however, entirely agree that Daniel took Charlie's place in Jack's life. I think these 2 friendships were very different. Jack and Kowalsky were trusted collegues, who most likely bonded over their dirty work, they were comrads-in-arms, liked some macho-posturing and had a buddy-buddy relationship Jack didn't get to have with anybody on SG-1. That's not to say they weren't friends or that their bond wasn't deep, on the contrary; my personal canon has them as best friends from very early times (Academy perhaps?) but it was very different to the J/D friendship.
Daniel was more in touch with his emotions and emotional honestly and I think that throughout the series he was pushing Jack to become a better person. He argued about morality, he fought about O'Neill's soul and IMO it was a new experience for Jack. Kowalsky didn't do it - not because he didn't want to or didn't care, but because he was just as damaged and cynical as his friend. That was the way it was in Black/Special Ops.
So IMO Daniel didn't replace Charles. I don't think anybody ever did (Teal'c might have come the closest, but still..). I honestly can't recall Jack being so relaxed and open and friendly with anybody else. I think Daniel found a niche of sorts in his life and became a sort of friend Jack never even imagined he'd have. Both guys offered different kinds of friendships and IMO Jack needed both.
Am I making sense? It's after midnight here so I'm not even thinking straight..:o

Actually I agree with you completely Petra (at least I think I do). I didn't mean to suggest that Daniel replaced Kawalsky, and if I said that I shouldn't have. I'm just suggesting a natural progression of relationships. Like you pointed out, Daniel has this moral imperitive that pushes Jack in a way Kawalsky never did. Whereas Jack and Kawalsky operated together in the grey areas in a way Daniel couldn't possibly understand. So yes, very different relationships. But in the whole process of going through the gate and discovering other worlds, Jack is rediscovering himself. Just as I'm sure Kawalsky was one of the people who kept Jack sane in the mad world of special ops, Daniel is the one who is there to help Jack navigate the wider universe opened to him by the stargate program. Very different men and friendships, but I can see some juxtaposition in their roles in relation to Jack.

Another great example of a hero!:jack: But Jack would see it as duty not heroics. Gotta love the guy!
Unlike his first mission to Abydos wherein he was suicidal first and mission second, in Lost City he downloaded the Ancient library with the intention to defeat the Goa'uld and save Earth. However, he also knew the price for this deed would be his life.
Thank goodness for the Ancient outpost's pod thingy to suspend him until the Asgard could rescue him. And let's not forget that Sam went to extraordinary lengths...again...to see it through and at the risk of her life. But, Jack's worth it.

Question of the day: As a child what kind of fire cracker or firework did young Jack use on Fourth of July?
I think he started with sparklers (and introduced Cassie to them), but as he got a little older, he really liked the ones that blew up (hence his fondness for explosives!).
I agree! I think he got into the really loud and awesome ones as he got older :)

Cold Lazarus
http://i1012.photobucket.com/albums/af243/hlndncr/PDVD_139.jpg
In my continuing study of the evolution of the character of Jack O'Neill, today I am taking a look at Cold Lazarus.
Summary:
Jack is zapped by energy from a crystal on an alien planet and left for dead, while SG1 unknowingly returns to earth with a replica of O'Neill created from energy from the cyrstal. The O'Neill copy leaves base and goes to the house of O'Neill's ex-wife, Sara, in search of Charlie. When he discovers Charlie is gone and cannot be brought back he speaks with Sara about her son's death and Jack's reaction to it. The energy in the copy begins to breakdown and Sara takes him to the hospital, where his instability causes all sorts of havoc. Meanwhile, Sam and Daniel (with some help from Teal'c and his staff weapon) are investigating the crystals when the real Jack comes back through the gate. When SG1 discovers the danger and determines where the O'Neill copy has gone, they go after it. At the hospital, the real Jack sees Sara and goes to confront his copy. The energy entity admits that hurting Jack was a mistake and he misunderstood his pain, thinking that if he could bring back Charlie all would be well. In order to make Jack understand that Charlie is not completely gone and will always be with him, he transforms into a replica of Jack's son. Passing Sara on the way out of the hospital, SG1 returns to the SGC with the Charlie copy and Jack takes him back home through the gate.
Generally:
This episode was supposed to confront the issues of Jack O'Neill's past and put them to rest. I'm not sure that it was particularly successful in that regard because it really left a lot up in the air for me. It seemed to me that they were trying to reconcile Jack with Sara, not sever the connection, and throughout season 1 other references are made to her as well. Maybe it does help in putting to rest some of the lingering guilt Jack felt over Charlie's death (in CotG Jack says he could never forgive himself), but here again Jack has said that sometimes he could - and in fact wanted to - forget what happened to Charlie. The entity seemed to want him to remember Charlie and think of him as always being there. I just don't feel that in the end the character of Jack comes away better for this experience.
One thing that I did try to keep in mind is that for most of the episode we are not actually seeing Jack, but a copy made from the energy of this crystal enitity (whom I will call e-Jack). [And unfortunately it seems that whenever RDA is playing an alien entity the monotone voice and robotic movement comes out.] While e-Jack appears to have at least some of Jack's memories, it does not understand them. And it certainly does not have Jack's personality (Sara points out that she has never seen him so emotional and e-Jack states that he has none of the O'Neill bravado). The real Jack, in contrast is much more vociferous and volitle (as we see when he comes back through the gate after believing he had been abandoned on the planet).
Jack's Relationship with SG1:
It is evident that at this stage Jack does not have much of a personal relationship with any of the members of his team. For one thing, they don't notice anything different when e-Jack comes back with them. Sam knows nothing about his history, and while Daniel is probably closest to him at this point, even he admits that Jack really doesn't tell him much. A lot is made of the instant bond between Jack and Teal'c, but it appears that Jack has made no efforts to really socialize with Teal'c or get to know him on a personal level since he promised to show Teal'c his world several episodes back (The Enemy Within), but obviously has not yet done so, and Teal'c was the one actually sought Jack out.
Jack's Relationship with Sara:
I have to begin by admitting that I don't at all care for the actress who portrayed Sara in this episode. I'm not sure exactly why, I think it might be the voice, she was very whiney.
We get a brief glimpse of a Mrs. O'Neil at the beginning of the movie. She answer's the door when officer's from General West's staff come to call the Colonel back into service. She essentially ignores them as she stands in the kitchen with her back to the world, pulling on a cigarette. She tells them her husband is home and when they ask if they can speak with him her response is, "You can try." This could suggest that she has tried to speak with him herself, but has given up. But the aloofness with which she stands there (as her husband is upstairs with a gun almost to his head) tells me that it wasn't all Jack's fault that their relationship was not in a healthy place.
Given that Jack's character changed a great deal between the movie and the show it may not be that much of a stretch to say that Sara's character had changed as well. But I can at least rationalize some of the change in Jack by the incredible experiences he had gone through.
Most of what I've read suggests to me that many in fandom believe Jack and Sara had a great relationship before their son died, and I guess that is how it is portrayed hear, but it just doesn't ring true to me. I don't see them as this bright, perfect, happy family with a sunshiney Jack. He's still in black ops (that dark side didn't just appear magically out of no where). We learn later that Sara has forbidden guns of any kind at her house (ridiculous given Jack's job, and, as someone who grew up around guns, knowing how important it is to be taught as a child how to approach them and handle them properly), which must have caused at least some contention between them.
Where their relationship actually stands from this episode is confusing at best. We see some evidence that Sara may still be pining for Jack (she's not over you yet, says her dad to e-Jack), which doesn't seem right considering she left him. (There is some uncertainty here because in CotG Jack tells Daniel that Sara left him, but in this episode Sara questions him about why he left her - perhaps she's talking about his leaving for Abydos, but this is still confusing.) When the real Jack confronts Sara at the hospital he tells her he wants to hear all about her experience and that they were the greatest, but then just walks away as she whispers goodbye. I guess I'm supposed to take this as, it was good while it lasted, but now it's over and I'm moving on.
As I said at the outset, I don't think this episode did a very good job of giving Jack closure, certainly not with regard to Sara.

Oh, interesting. I’ll butt in again. :P
It seemed to me that they were trying to reconcile Jack with Sara, not sever the connection, and throughout season 1 other references are made to her as well.
See, I never took it as attempt at reconciliation. I think CL successfully showed that whatever Jack and Sara had had, no matter how great their marriage had been, it was all water under bridge at the time of CL. However I don’t think Jack ever truly stopped loving her – not as in being in love, but loving as a mother of his child who shared his life for a long time – and I thought it only natural that getting over her took him a long time. I’d even go as far as to say that the little references to her throughout the season are some of the best characterization SG-1 ever did. It felt natural.
I think that the whole point of the ep – which I love btw – is to give Jack a sort of closure and through allowing him to say goodbye make peace with Charlie’s death. Because as he himself admits on CotG, while he’s able to forget he can’t forgive himself and consequently move on. And yes, Jack never really forgave himself but I think that this episode – talking with fake Charlie about his feelings, specifically - helped him realize that trying to forget won’t work in the long run and is nothing more than escape from pain. He needs to confront what happened and learn to celebrate Charlie’s life, remember the good times, despite his guilt. That’s the lesson of crystal entity IMO, and I think Jack understands it and does just that.
It is evident that at this stage Jack does not have much of a personal relationship with any of the members of his team. For one thing, they don't notice anything different when e-Jack comes back with them.
Heh, that’s a very good point.
Okay, as a staunch fan of Jack/Teal’c friendship/brotherhood (or in more SGU terms: bromance) I have to disagree. I don’t see how the fact that Jack hasn’t yet taken T on a trip to Colorado Springs means that he made no efforts to socialize at all. I think he probably has, just inside the mountain. Doesn’t Sam say something about Jack spending so much time at work that a thought about him having a family hasn’t even crossed her mind? (it’s been a while since I watched CL) Besides we are talking about the first months of the Stargate Program’s existence, so about a very hectic time. As a 2IC of the command in process of being set up Jack probably didn’t leave the mountain often.
Actually I agree. Much of good!Sara fanon was a direct response to S/J fanfics that vilified her. And I don’t think that’s fair because let’s face it: Jack isn’t an easy man to live with. He’s moody, he has a sharp tongue and a darkness in him, he’s closed off, can be distant emotionally, has problems with talking about stuff that bothers him (talking to others about things that bother them is easier for him, I think). He couldn’t talk about his job, even when it clearly affected him. Sara must have been a very strong woman to deal with it all and raise their son mostly on her own. Their marriage survived 4 months he spent as a POV too. I guess what I’m trying to say is, it must have been good to survive that much. However I agree with you that at the same time all these things must have put a strain on it because I’m not sure that Charlie’s death would have driven them apart if they hadn’t had some problems even before that.
Where their relationship actually stands from this episode is confusing at best. Re: bolded, I think she’s talking about Abydos mission. She knew he was suicidal, then the AF people came and he left – so she left too.
I don’t think Sara’s pining for Jack. I think, as I said in the beginning, that they are pretty much at the same page here. They had a great thing but it didn’t work out. They still love each other but they know too much has happened between them and they need to go their separate ways now. And it’s not easy and it will take time but there’s no point in trying to get together again. And personally I believe Jack met with her later and they talked about this experience, because he knew she deserved it and he couldn’t do it in a hospital corridor in the middle of the mission.

Thanks for you thoughts. I just want to comment on this last one about Jack meeting with Sara later to talk about it. A part of me wants to believe that because I don't much like a Jack who just walks away and never speaks to her again. But Jack has such a talent for avoiding hard things (especially emotions) that I see him maybe intending to contact Sara but always finding an excuse for not actually doing it. In my mind that's part of what that aborted letter to Sara was about in Brief Candle. But there again he couldn't get himself to really bring it all out in the open so her name at the top of the page is as far as he got.
While I'm sure Jack would always love Sara as a woman he was married to for at least 10 years (Charlie was about 9 when he died right?), and the mother of his beloved son, I can't really see that he was still in love with Sara at any point in the series. Was he still getting over the whole tramatic experience of losing his child, seeing his marriage fall apart, and at one point wanting to end his life? Absolutely! And really you never completely get over an experience like that. But, IMHO, I don't believe he was getting over Sara per se.
Maybe Sara wasn't so much pining for Jack as for the life she had lost. It was clear from the way she kept everything of Charlie's just the same that she was clinging to her son and the life she had with him.

Normally I'd agree, but this is Sara. They were who knows how many years together. I think he'd make the effort for the sake of old times and also because he feels guilty of failing her earlier.
As for BC letter, I see it as part of the whole "getting over you" process. I believe he was still a little in love with her at the beginning of the series and maybe their post-Cold Lazarus meeting reminded him of good times or alternatively, had taken place not too long before BC mission and was thus still fresh on his mind. Plus there's the whole thing with his family - he never mentioned it, so maybe he didn't have anyone apart from Sara and wanted to feel connected to someone, even his ex, facing death in a few days.
While I'm sure Jack would always love Sara as a woman he was married to for at least 10 years (Charlie was about 9 when he died right?),
I have no idea how old was Charlie when he died. Judging from the pictures and memories from the movie and Cold Lazarus I'd say he was about 10-12, but the boy in The Devil You Know seemed to be much younger, like 8-9. Personally I go with 10-12.
Maybe Sara wasn't so much pining for Jack as for the life she had lost. It was clear from the way she kept everything of Charlie's just the same that she was clinging to her son and the life she had with him.
I don't think that not wanting to part with the things of you dead child relatively soon after his death (1-2 years, right?) means that you cling to the old life. I think that she was still grieving at this point, much like Jack, and the encounter with fake Charlie helped her too. Sadly we've neve seen nor heard from her again, so we can't know for sure. ;)

Last time I looked at Jack's character from a personal angle. Now it's time to take a look inside Jack O'Neill the military man.
Summary
Teal'c is put on trial for killing a cripple on the planet Cartago while still First Prime of Apophis. Daniel believes they can respect the Byrsa's laws and still win Teal'c's freedom, but Jack sees that the proceedings are rigged and is determined to free his friend. Teal'c admits his guilt and is determined to give Hano, the man's son, his retribution, despite Jack's insistence that he is not responsible for the atrocities he may have committed under orders. While Daniel continues to plead for Teal'c's life, Jack and Sam return to the SGC and try to get General Hammond to send a show of force, hoping to intimidate the Byrsa into handing Teal'c over. General Hammond will not authorize the mission because Teal'c is not considered one of our own and we don't interfere in the prosecution of war crimes. When Jack and Sam return to the planet, the Jaffa have returned to harvest host for the goa'uld. When Teal'c risks his own life to save the villagers, Hano determines that he is not the same man who killed his father and recinds his death sentence.
Favorite Lines

:jack: General Hammond, I have spent a lot of years in the service of my country, and I have been ordered to do some damned distasteful things. I will not allow them to execute my friend.
Jack/Teal'c
While this is often considered a Teal'c episode (and CJ puts in an awesome performance), we also get some very important insights into Jack's character and his military past. No details of Jack's time in special ops are revealed, but we see how some of his missions must continue to haunt him. For example, when Teal'c asks if Jack has ever "faced the crying eyes of a child whose father you have just murdered," he answers "not exactly." This suggest that there may certainly have been some similar type of incident in Jack's past he is not proud of, and he says "there are a lot of things we do that we wish we could change, and we sure as hell can't forget. . . ."
I get the feeling that Jack was very good at his job in special forces, and that isn't exactly a point of pride with him. When arguing with Hammond, he equates some of his own actions in black ops with those Teal'c had to take as First Prime. But Jack believed it was necessary; he took action believing that he was ultimately doing the right thing, in the service of his country. While Teal'c was in a different position, serving a cruel and merciless master, Jack more than anyone else understands that he had to make some very difficult choices in an impossible situation and he is not entirely responsible, nor should he bare the full consequences. He wants Teal'c to understand and accept that too. I almost think he needs Teal'c and the others to do so, or else he would have to reevalute some of his own decisions and actions in a way that would undermine the foundation of duty and honor he has built his life upon.
I think that's one reason why he was so angry with Hammond for not coming to Teal'c's rescue. For Jack it might draw into question the validity of his own past. I wonder too if this would erode is confidence in obtaining support for his actions in the future. He himself has been left behind once before (as we learn in A Matter of Time). Jack emphasized to Teal'c the notion of dimished responsibility and chain of command, but can that notion hold up if his superiors are willing to walk away when it becomes politically inconvenient to back the decisions of a commander operating on a battlefield against an enemy like no other we've faced.
Jack/Hammond
Up to this point, Jack and Hammond had begun to develop a healthy respect for one another. Hammond shows his trust in Jack when he initially agrees to mobilize forces on Jack's say so when he and Sam first return to the SGC without hearing all the details. It is only later in the briefing room where they come at odds. Even then, in the end Hammond does go to call the President at Jack's insistence rather than reprimanding him for what was clearly insubordination. I think Hammond does like and respect Jack. He wants to be on Jack's side, and he does his best to balance his sometimes competing responsibilities of obeying his superiors.
Jack's reaction to Hammond's arguments against rescuing Teal'c are sharp and personal. Part of this, as discussed above, relates to Jack's past military experience, but I also think he is hurt and disappointed because he trusted Hammond to take his side. At first, Jack's relationship with Hammond was to the point and, at times, borderline insubordinate. But over the course of time, Hammond had won Jack's loyalty and respect because of the strong, yet compassionate commander he is (for example how tried to look after Jack and the team when they thought they had lost Daniel in Fire & Water). I think Jack expected more loyalty from Hammond in return, not just for himself but for Teal'c as well. (Fortunately, I think Hammond's actions in the next episdoe, Enigma, go along way to repairing this rift.)
Jack/Daniel
We definitely see the opposing forces that are Jack and Daniel in this episode. Jack is focused on saving Teal'c, whatever it takes. Daniel agrees with Jack in principle, but he still wants to respect the local people and their customs. He is full of wide-eyed optimism that if they act circumspectly the right ultimately must prevail. Jack's view is justifiably more jaded. He understands that sometimes you have to make your own right. I do think it is interesting that, while Daniel does try to reign Jack in, he doesn't entirely stand in his way (although I'm not sure he could stop Jack from using military force if it came right down to it). And while Jack has no confidence in the diplomatic option, he still lets Daniel proceed. And really, in the end, Daniel does win the day. His argument that Teal'c is a new man (along with Teal'c's actions to protect the townspeople) is what eventually sways Hano. I'm not sure Jack fully realizes that.
Jack/Sam
I see Sam as fully backing and supporting Jack in the episode (except for maybe her skepticism about his legal and diplomatic skills) not just because he is her commanding officer but because she is coming from a similar frame of reference. She obviously doesn't have the history with dubious military orders that Jack does, but she recognizes that she may, and she is a person who most certainly believes in following orders and respecting the chain of command (example, her later actions in Chain Reaction). I think she strongly believes that Jack is right to expect the assistance and support of their superiors to rescue Teal'c.

The first thing that comes to mind is Seven Days, The Mis-Adventures of Jack and Sam (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/612726/1/). It is Jack/Sam ship with angst and both get their fair share of whumping. Daniel gets a little too at the end, but it's not Daniel heavy.
There's a sequal too: Seven Days, The Return Home (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/724987/1/).

This suggest that there may certainly have been some similar type of incident in Jack's past he is not proud of, and he says "there are a lot of things we do that we wish we could change, and we sure as hell can't forget. . .
Yes. If TEal'c is a war criminal, so is Jack.
I've grown to like this episode more over time for the moral issues it poses. Sure, chain of command undermines free choice, but you can't use the "I was just following orders" argument for everything. How much is Teal'c responsible for? How much was Jack?
good stuff.

Solitudes
http://i1012.photobucket.com/albums/af243/hlndncr/PDVD_023-3.jpg
This time we look at Jack as a leader and how he faces a life and death situation.
Summary
Jack and Sam are thrown through a wormhole into an unknown ice cavern, without Daniel and Teal’c. Jack is seriously injured with a broken leg, some cracked ribs, and possible internal bleeding. Sam finds the DHD encased in ice and they begin to dig it out. While the SGC begins searching for the missing members of SG1, Sam attempts to keep Jack and her alive while trying to fix the DHD and dial home. After hours of work and several failed attempts at dialing home, Jack orders her to climb out and find help. She reluctantly leaves him behind, but discovers that there is nothing but ice for miles around. When Sam returns to Jack he is delirious and near death. Through observation and deduction, Daniel determines that Sam and Jack must have come through a second gate on earth, which they discover in Antarctica, and they are rescued in the nick of time.
Favorite Scene
Believing they are his last words, he tells Sam it was an honor to serve with her as she climbs out of the crevasse to find help.
Favorite Lines
:jack: What’s four?
:sam: There is no four.
:jack: It’s after three.
:sam: Not this time, Sir.
Jack Facing Death
We learn a little of Jack’s past here and it tells me something about how Jack deals with death. As Sam sets Jack’s leg he tells her about a black ops mission he undertook in the 80s where his chute opened late and he was stranded somewhere near the border of Iran and Iraq with nine broken bones, including a skull fracture, and he had to drag himself to safety. It took him nine days. He said he did it because he had to see Sara again.
Both in that earlier experience and here, Jack doesn’t give up easily when faced with the very real possibility of his own death. In fact, throughout the episode he is mostly quite positive and unwilling to concede defeat. It is interesting to contrast that with how defeated he was when facing the reality of Charlie’s death. He couldn’t drag himself out of the pain and loss. He needed help (and a stargate) to find a reason for living again. It tells me that Jack lives for others. He had to see Sarah. He knew he needed to help his young and inexperienced Captain. His own death doesn’t scare him; losing people he loves and people under his command does.
It also tells me how much Jack needs others. He needed someone like Sarah to come home to. He needed Sam to depend on him for leadership and guidance. He needed Daniel and Skaara to point the way out of his pain. I think Jack is often misportrayed as a loner. In fact, he is at his worst—most likely to succumb to his own demons—when he is left alone.
Leadership
Jack shows so many excellent qualities of leadership in this situation. He has a young and inexperienced Captain (with a tendency toward negativism who thinks too much) with him who has never had to endure something like this before. He recognizes that, especially given his injuries, his role is to give her the confidence she needs to find the answers and get them home.
The first thing Jack teaches Sam is that attitude is important. She is discouraged and defeated. She’s looking at the obstacles. He starts by telling her that they are getting home and she has to believe it. And he never loses his humor. Lightening the mood, and holding on to hope, gives them both the strength they need to fight the pain, discomfort and discouragement as they try to save themselves, while still hoping for a rescue.
The next thing he teaches her is to focus on what’s important and do what they can do. Sam is concerned that Daniel and Teal’c may not have made it back to the SGC and even if they did, there is no way to search every possible planet they may have landed on. Jack basically reels her in and makes her stop thinking about what’s going on out there. They have a DHD to dig out. They (or she) have a way out of the crevasse. That’s what they can do for now. So he goes to work for as long as he can, and she follows his lead.
He demonstrates his belief in her, to fix the DHD, to find help, to do whatever needs to be done. He has to depend on her because of his injuries and her expertise. He knows that and she knows he trusts her.
Finally, he cares about his people. When he can’t help with the work anymore, he does the cooking. He makes sure she rests. When he is certain he’s dying, his final order is to send her away (hoping she will be saved), and what he believes are his final words are given to commend her.
I think Sam comes out of this experience having grown the most because she saw real leadership in action.

Jack doesn't say all his previously broken bones were the result of the mission where he fractured his skull. He merely says that this broken leg is his ninth broken bone, if you count skull fractures.

Well this is how the exchange went:
:sam: Is this your first broken bone?
:jack: Ah, ah, no. This…this would be, uh, nine, if you count skull fractures.
:sam: How did you manage that?
:jack: Little parachuting mishap, over the borders of Iran and Iraq, back in…eighty…uh….
So you are right that the leg is the ninth broken bone. So I read this exchange as indicating that the other eight (including the skull fracture) came in the parachuting accident.

So I read this exchange as indicating that the other eight (including the skull fracture) came in the parachuting accident.
Whereas I read this as indicating he was talking only about the skull fracture. My reason for disagreeing about all eight is practical--I just don't see how he could break eight bones (including his skull) and walk/crawl/slither along for nine days. It would be hard enough with just the broken skull.

Recently I purchased some SG-1 epis from seasons 1, 2, and 3 for my iPod. I'm just lovin' watching Jack in these early seasons. He's discovering new things about the Goa'uld by trial and error or with Teal'c's help. For example, in Within the Serpent's Grasp, the season 1 cliffhanger episode, Jack learns about the zat'ni'katel or as Jack calls it, the "zat gun." And it's hilarious when Jack, Sam, and Daniel get floored when the ship goes in hyperdrive.
On the other hand, in season 2's first epi (part two of WtSG), The Serpent's Lair, Jack is the consummate Alpha Male leader as he orders the team to prepare to detonate the C-4 charges throughout Klorel's ship to destroy the Goa'uld before they annihilate the Earth. Jack is a take charge, dynamic, kicka$$ leader. *faints*

Depends who is doing the massage. I can't see him like the type of guy who would let another guy do a body massage. However, if a pretty lady was doing the massage, I think Jack would have no problem. Now if it was Sam doing the massage even better:D

No college football on today. The Army-Navy game is sceduled for December.
I think Jack would root for the Navy because of their fighter pilots. He would feel that he had more in common with them than the Army. (Of course he would root for the Navy just because he knows I'm a Navy veteran and would be very supportive of my game!)

Actually, I was mistaken. It was the Maryland/Navy game that was on today (Labor Day) not the Army/Navy. I live in Baltimore and the Navel Academy is in Annapolis, so I heard about it. It was on ESPN today at 4pm, so it's not just local, so Jack may have been able to watch it! :jack:

I'm sure someone can help us out with some screen caps?
I would love to help you out with some caps, but.. I have gotten that far yet! :) Sorry!
Only one I have is..

If you want a good Jack Stargate novel, read "Four Dragons" by Diana Botsford. It's getting good reviews.

I read it and I don't understand the reviews. It isn't the most horrible Stargate novel I've read, but it's not that good. I've been considering doing a full review myself because I just think some of the praise it's been getting is largely undeserved IMHO.

Oh yeah, with Teal'c!
:tealcanime49:O'Neill, I do not understand. What is a sharkopus?
:jack_new_anime04:T, my friend, have a seat, pay attention, and learn. Hey, pass the popcorn!
:danielanime07:Jack, you can't be serious!
:jack_new_anime06:I'm very serious. I want some popcorn before it's gone!
:danielanime08:No, I mean...wait a minute. Teal'c, this is just a sci fi movie. It's not real.
:tealc:Ahh, but DanielJackson, have we not seen many wonders in our travels. Perhaps this is not so farfetched.
:jack_new_anime04:Yeah, Danny-boy!
:danielanime08:Why do I bother? Um, pass the popcorn.

Go to the SYFY site and look it up. It was half shark and half octopus mutant movie. It was so bad it was hilarious!

I will turn the channel to a SyFy movie JUST to laugh at it. Ahh...and they cancelled SG-1...go figure. I don't think Jack would actually watch it. Teal'c might like it, though.:p

I'm sorry I forgot. But you can still look it up. It was a very very very very very very very very stupid movie with a lot of skippie dress young ladies being eaten by the creature:) Yes it was a guy flick! I think Teal'c and Jack would love it.:P

Crystal Skull 3.21
A very funny Jack scene!
INT—INFIRMARY, SGC
[Teal'c enters the Infirmary, followed by an invisible Daniel, and heads over to Carter's bed.]
FRASIER
She's going to be fine, Teal'c. Her exposure wasn't long enough to cause any permanent damage.
O'NEILL
Doc!
[Frasier turns to the other bed and pulls back the curtain. O'Neill is lying in the other bed, wrapped up to keep warm.]
FRASIER
You can protest all you want, Colonel, but it'll be a while before you get your strength back. So relax.
O'NEILL
Oh come on…
FRASIER
Ah! Doctor's orders.
[She leaves.]
O'NEILL
(muttering)
Napoleonic power monger. (He rolls over to face Teal'c.)
News?
TEAL'C
Daniel Jackson was nowhere in the vicinity of the pyramid.
O'NEILL
What the hell happened to him?
TEAL'C
I do not believe the skull is a weapon, O'Neill.
DANIEL
(to himself)
Well, you're right about that, it's not a weapon.
TEAL'C
It is indeed a teleportation device. I believe the artefact itself…
DANIEL
(speaking over him)
No, something else happened.
TEAL'C
Dr ROTHMAN is now studying it.
O'NEILL
ROTHMAN couldn't figure out an ashtray. The guy we need working on that skull is Daniel.
TEAL'C
It is he whom we endeavour to locate, O'Neill.
O'NEILL
Look, I'm sick of laying around. Help me up.
TEAL'C
Dr FRASIER believes you are not strong enough to undertake such a mission.
O'NEILL
Yeah, whatever.
[He tries to get up and succeeds in rolling off the bed and onto the floor.]
TEAL'C
Dr FRASIER is usually correct in such matters.
[He bends down and hauls O'Neill back onto the bed to lie facedown.]
O'NEILL
(muffled)
Thank you.
TEAL'C
You are welcome, O'Neill.
