*sigh*
just finished watching endgame ...
when he has to make the "tough choice" ....
he had small parts in the ep but made each so poignant ...
i mean the spot when danny tells him he would hate to have to be the one to tell the president .... ... no words from jack ... just his facial!!
he is so great with saying so much while saying nothing!!
then his face when he finds SG1 is ok!! priceless ...
and then the last scene when he tells the team "tough choice" after danny says he should have blown up the ship with the gate and the team in it!!
his little smirk on his face when he walks aways!!
did i mention i love this man!!!:p

Jack isn't a dumb man. I'm sure he can figure out how to work a digital camera. There are many things both appropriate for this forum and not, that I think he'd use it for. . . :)

Yeahsureyabetcha! Jack is multi-talented and that includes the use of doohickeys like digital cameras.
One of my alltime favorite epic fanfics is "What Will It Take" by SG1Fanfic. In this story Jack not only uses a laptop for journaling but to download digital pics. He is so clever! *reminds self he is a fictional character* Oooops, I don't want to burst anybody's bubble about Jack! :D

Question of the day:Does jack watch game or reality TV shows?
I don't think he'd do the reality-TV thing - he'd be more of the mine of doing those things than watching them - but I could see him enjoying the game shows. Especially the older, sillier ones like Match Game or Beat the Clock or Let's Make a Deal from the 70's. And yes, Jeopardy, just to see how many he could get.

Question-of-the-Day (OK, so I can't get to the point and just ask the question. :jack_new_anime06:)
General O'Neill is a very busy and influential man in the Pentagon. He has the President's ear and, more importantly, his trust. At the end of a long day he doesn't want to cook although we know he has a secret and tasty omelet recipe that is to-die-for.:D But, when at home he gets hungry and thirsty at least for a snack or when someone drops by (NOT Ainty or ONeill2LLs):D.
What 5 items will someone always find in Jack's refrigerator?

Lots of talk about Jack being too over the hill for a 3rd SG1 movie. :( Now we don't think so, but do you think HE would think he's not cut out for field work anymore? Do you think he should make a comment like "I'm getting too old for this"? ( and then clearly show he's still got it?) :)

I wasn't a MacGyver fan. At the time I think I was a Moonlighting and Remington Steele fan although I knew about the MacGyver series and thought RDA was "cute." But, as Jack O'Neill...OMG, *bangs head* why did I wait to discover SG-1 until 2004? The Man was hot and setting the standard for the "sexy, smart, adventurous, funny and mature" man in a TV series.

same here...nell. My hubby(now ex) wouldn't let me watch MacGyver, but I did sneak in Magnum PI. He was soo jealous... When he was home he would take the remote from me. :( He even changed the channel when Magnum was on.
I was a Magnum P.I. fan too! That was my dream to drive down Diamondhead road in Hawaii and see the Robin Master's Estate!
But I was lucky one September in Calgary, I was at the horse jumping show in Spruce Meadows, this guy was showing off his horses and his cart and how they could maneuver around corners, then he says "Maybe I should ask Tom Selleck's wife if she want to go for a ride, well I and three other girls I was sitting with said "What?" and there he was sitting in the middle of field with the owners of Spruce Meadows. I did have my camera at the time but he was too far away for me to get any good pictures ;) I thought this is great, I have seen three out of four guys I have wanted to see. Tom Selleck, Rick Springfield and well then I got to see Richard Dean Anderson in Lake Louise. All that is left is to see David James Elliot, but that is never gonna happen
I watched MacGyver and started recording the show around Season 5 :)
But yes RDA has been my favorite.

I never watched MacGyver, but knew about it and always thought RDA was attractive. But when I saw him on SG1, I just thought "Wow! He's gotten gorgeous!" :p:D
I liked MacGyver, and even have all seven seasons on DVD, but never thought he was drop-dead gorgeous. Cute, but not hot or gorgeous. But I liked the show's concept.
The honest-to-God truth is that, when I first started watching SG1, I had a hard time believing it was even the same guy. Rick was just so darn gorgeous as Jack that he took my breath away, so much more than Mac did. But his look was so different, and the character was so different, it felt like a different actor. Just goes to show you what an amazing actor he is.

2004 ... how bout not until jan 2005 (its good to be king ~ my first ep!) ... in time to find that Jack had just left the show ... i had seen him in Atlantis ... but ... d'oh!!

I agree 100%. Jack O'Neill is the handsome man to MacGyver's boyish good looks. And yes, an amazing actor.

Preachin' to the choir here. :) Personally, RDA appealed to me way more in his SG1 days than his MacGyver days.
Totally agree! :)

Several years ago I think our Jack the Pilot would like the speed and thrills of the rollercoaster's adrenaline high. Today, I think our general would choose the ferris wheel to see the lay of the park. Reconnaissance to find the funnel cake stand and the beer garden.

"MacGyver" was my childhood's series and while all the girls I knew where "in love" with varous singers/members of boysbands/actors I had a crush on Mac :D :D But oddly enough I never thought he was more than cute, I even remember argueing with my grandma that "it's not about the looks but the smarts", lol :D :D

"Continuum" OT:
Recently somebody was talking about the commentary on the "Continuum" movie, and since I hadn't listened to it before I sat down to do so. I got such a laugh out of the part when BW and MW were talking about scenes on the submarine, and how BW actually allowed the Chief of the Boat to call out "action" and "cut" in the scene where AU O'Neill comes out of the infirmary and walks off down the hall. Apparently BW wanted RDA to simply continue walking the entire way down the hall as the camera was rolling. The COB called "cut" too soon and RDA stopped walking. The COB yelled out at him something like "Anderson ... get back here and do that the way you're supposed to!" I laughed right out loud at the way BW was describing that scene. I bet the COB had great fun getting to do that ... and chastising RDA for not doing it the "right" way.:D

I love Jack's scene at the submarine.. he's back at his Colonel-mode ;)
Haven't got the chance to hear the commentary yet, but MW (or BW :S) descreibed that at the ComicCon panel.

I agree - he'd have a small gang over for a barbeque, just Sam, Daniel, Teal'c, Janet (who is not dead in my rose-colored world), Cassie, Jonas (if he's on-world), and Hammond. But he'd only have fireworks if they're legal. If not, they'd move into the house after dark and watch the national display on his new, large screen flat-panel high-definition TV. ;-) Then they'd go out onto his back deck - since fireworks would be later in Colorado Springs than in DC - and they'd listen to the sounds and watch for small bits above the tree tops.

Seasons 1 - 7...Jack would have his team over for BBQ and fireworks. Maybe another year they would go to festivities at Colorado Springs to see the city's fireworks display. For a real treat they would fly to Washington, DC for Teal'c's benefit.
Season 8...As a rule, General O'Neill cannot show favoritism towards SG-1 and only invite them to his home. As commander of SGC he has to treat all teams equally. I don't think he wants to invite the whole base to his home for the 4th of July. I doubt that Hammond did that. I know he took SG-1 fishing at his cabin but I overlooked that because it was important to move the Ship forward.

Unfortunately the second disk in the set containing the footage of Mr Anderson has not met with approval from Richard. He has asked that the footage be re-edited, and he wishes to be a part of the production process so we can get a final product that is to his liking and of high quality and content (he is a perfectionist after all, and was heavily involved with the edits of his Stargate episodes).
The process may take some time, so what we have decided to do is treat the double set as 2 separate products so we can start shipping the first DVD immediately and ship the second once the final approval is obtained from Mr Anderson.
For those who pre-purchased your DVD's at the 2008 convention
You will still receive both DVD's. The first will ship very soon, and the second will ship as soon as the approval is received. There will be no extra charge for postage of the second DVD.
For those wanting to purchase the DVD's
We will be making the first DVD available in our Gatecon store when it re-opens next week. The seconds DVD featuring Mr Anderson will be available in the store when approval is granted. Please Note that the two DVD's will be separate items in the store with all proceeds of the Richard Dean Anderson DVD going to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
The Gatecon store will open next week.

As a matter of fact, if Jack was in D.C. for the holiday he might get a chili dog from Ben's Chili Bowl. President-elect Obama had lunch there before his inauguration.

On the other hand, I had no intention of raising any political issues. So, moving right along I bet Jack might enjoy lunch at another of D.C.s favorites...Red, Hot, and Blue BBQ. The pork BBQ is moist and flavorful and they make a deeee-licious potato salad with egg.;)

Something I posted on the S/J thread:
Just got an email from a friend from Los Angeles. In the Times business section this morning, there is an article saying that MGM studio is in debt for 3.5 billion and they are releasing only one film this year which is Fame and 4 next year. The Hollywood insiders don't think the company can survive. They did not say anything about DVD productions so I'm not saying they aren't going to make the movies but things aren't looking good for MGM. IMO if you have the money this is the time to invest and buy what we can from MGM so they can make to produce our movies. I know lots of us have hard feeling with things they have done in the past but now it's the season for all good Stargate fans to join together and prove what we can do, to help them out of this mess. This is an absolutely selfish reaction to the news because I do want closure to S/J and the Atlantis story line.

Very good question. I had to scroll through the episode descriptions on GW homepage. In 99% of the episodes with Jack I would take anything rather than not see him at all. But, here are the 1% I could live without:
Real World on SGA. A waste of his time and talent. *ducks tomatoes*
Honestly, my first epi choice was A Hundred Days but I know that it was necessary for the Ship development.
Then, I considered Shades of Grey but it was also necessary for character development. It showed us Jack's capacity for mean-spiritedness.

Definitely 100 Days. (Yes, I'm a shipper, too.)
They could have shown how frantic Sam was about getting him back without all the business with that dishonest witch who seduced him while drunk. I don't buy that it was necessary for the J/S development. (Just MO, of course.)
I seriously can't think of any other JackCentric episode that I don't love.

For me, the problem with the torture scenes in Abyss is that they are just too real world. :( Most of the violence in Stargate doesn't bother me because it's such a make-believe world, but Ba'al torturing Jack brings it too close to home.

Exactly. That's what makes it so harrowing. So a well done hour of tv, showcasing RDA's talent but not quite in line with the usual SG1.
(This "reality" is also why I could never stomach Ba'al as the joke he later became--though I guess that's for another thread).

Awhile back we were talking about the Jack & Sam wedding photo from Point of View and how RDA was wearing a wedding ring in the original photo, but not in copies of it. And then the conversation got around to how nervous RDA was in the wedding scene in episode 200, and then whether Jack would wear a wedding ring in this reality when married to Sam. And I got to wondering if he'd worn a wedding ring when married to Sara. So I was just watching Lost City, and when it got to the part where Sam comes to visit Jack at his house and asks him if he ever talks to Sara ... the camera swings around to the picture on the wall of Jack, Sara and Charlie ... and Jack is wearing a wedding ring in that photo.

Question of the day: What predominant Jack episode do you wish never had happen?
I'm not sure such episode exists :P Well, okay, if I have to choose, it would be SGA's "Real World" (I watched it only for Jack) or "Endgame" in SG-1. I know it's a bit of a cheat since he doesn't have a big role there but TPTB still managed to write him OoC. I shudder whenever I think of it. Oh, and the same goes for "Gemini".
But all the eps you mentioned..I actually like them. :D
I'm a crazy shipper but I love 100 days. I don't even think that it's a very shippy ep, IMO it's mainly about Jack and what makes him tick and I love it for this reason.
'Abyss' is in my Top 3 of the whole series; I can't even say properly how much I love it!
As for Brief Candle" - it was a bad ep, no argument from me here, but I like my eye candy and Jack was incredibly good-looking and sexy in the first part (till he started to get old :P). So for yumminess alone I'm happy BC was made. :D
Same goes for Hathor. Although for some strange reason I really like Hathor..here you've got proof of my insanity :D
EDIT: leiasky, as for the Stargate Magazine - nope, nothing else of interest. I usually just leaf through each new issue at Borders and read/buy only if there is something really interesting (meaning RDA and SG-1 season 1-8 ;)). But lately everything's been about SGA, SGU and last 2 seasons of SG-1.

Definitely. Rather than teaching her in any formal way, I think they just get together and talk shop. I can see them getting together after every mission (theirs and the other SG teams) and discussing what happened, what they could have done differently and bouncing ideas off of each other. Also, I think they talk about past experiences, management issues and promotional opportunities in more general military terms. I'm sure he spent more time with her each time she was newly promoted.

I'm sure she always questioned everything that was new to her to see why he did it that way...and then filed away every bit of information she gleened from those discussions. She has always respected his abilities as a military strategist, and he has always respected her intellect.
It's a relationship made in heaven!!!

jumping off from a discussion on another thread--do you think Jack is a mentor to Sam? Does he "teach" her or does she learn by observing him?
I'd like to think that Jack teach her (and also Daniel) his markmanship, in the early years I don't think Sam is a good sniper, while Jack is a sniper from his Special Ops training (if I remember correctly, he has a ribbon for it in his Colonel dressblues) and in The Warrior eps, IMO, Jack is one smug & proud teacher in that scene (where Sam shoot her P90 at the dummy)
In Emancipation, Jack didn't know how high Sam's ability in hand-to-hand fight, he had to ask her to make sure she can fight Turghan. I bet when they got back from that mission, he trained Sam & Daniel himself (and with Teal'c's help) to fight better in hand-to-hand, sticks, knives fight and wielding guns.

July 22nd, 2009, 09:41 PM
I agree. I think he would train his team some 'secrets' just in case of a mission goes wrong. He could anticipate their next move other than what they were taught in military training. This reminds me of the episode..'Proving Ground'...with the cadets.
hedwig
July 22nd, 2009, 09:46 PM
I don't think Jack taught Sam how to shoot. Maybe he taught Daniel, but I have the impression that Sam was already highly trained in the use of weapons before she ever met Jack. I'm not sure where I got the notion, but I always thought that Sam had high skills in marksmanship. Jack may have had sniper training or whatever else he learned in the Black Ops/Special Ops, but I'm pretty sure Sam had a lot of that kind of stuff herself before being assigned to the SGC.
nell
July 23rd, 2009, 03:36 AM
I think that Jack's contribution to Sam's training was in how to be a commander by way of his example. Remember how many Jackisms she would spout in seasons 9-10? As officers on SG-1 they must have participated in briefings and debriefings to plan and later review missions. I also think that most of Sam's other training (arms, combat, etc) was by instructors and then on-the-job with SG-1. I can't see Jack and Sam having had lessons together as it would be too close and personal which they seemed to avoid in seasons 1-7.

Sounds good to me! Sam was pretty well educated before meeting Jack, in taking care of herself and others in her unit in dangerous situations. Maybe he made her a little less trusting of off worlders, before they proved themselves trust worthy. But the only real thing Jack can teach Sam, is how to be happy--------very happy:jack_new_anime18: (Sorry non-shippers:o)

Methinks in regard to that last line that it worked both ways ... they both taught each other to be happy (since Jack was never a very happy man for all those years before they got together):).

I really liked the new cut. I didn't understand some of the things that he changed but overall what was removed I didn't miss at all and I thought it was much better paced and less frantic. To me, it really did feel like a story, a movie, rather than a TV pilot launching a new series.

Just a little tidbit of info. :DI noticed that too. Btw, the photo is also on his bed stand in Fragile Balance. I guess he decided to hang it up in the living room by the end of Season 7. :)
Here's an enlargement I made so you can see his hand better (spoilered for size)...

Sadly, he's not wearing one in the trailer from SGU, since the very first thing we see is a shot of his left hand.
There's another trailer up, you have to watch it until the very end but I found it much more like Jack than the first one.

Moving on to Jack's other relationships. One of the things I like is his relationship with Gen'l Hammond. You can really see over the course of episodes them develop a mutual respect, though Jack is exasperating to Hammond often. :D I would guess that you don't get O'Neill's respect easily.

Having just watched the re-mix of Children of the Gods, the development of their relationship from the first meeting through season 8 when Jack was typing his resignation letter and taking it back, shows a striking and positive curve over their years together as commander and his second. Even in fanfics the Hammond/O'Neill relationship is usually positive although sometimes tense given Jack's respectful irreverence towards Hammond. Sometimes Jack has to "stick it to the man."

I'd be hard pressed to wish jack out of any episode but I'd have to agree that SGA's 'The Real World' was a really stupid episode and a waste of RDA's talents. They should have put him in 'Ripple Effect' instead.
As for the wedding ring thing. . . we know he wore one when married to Sara because in Cold Lazarus, its in his cigar box with photos of Charlie.
Re- SGU - imagine if all we saw of Jack in that scene was a hand with a wedding ring and part of a uniform shoulder . . .

OT re SGU:
Has anybody got a really close up screencap of Jack's hand as he's knocking on the door? From the angle shown of his hand, a ring might be noticeable ... (**you know, should TPTB have actually done such a thing ... **:D)

Yeah, Jack really didn't need to be in that episode, though I didn't think it was that bad. Now the one where he was on ATlantis was pretty good.
speaking of Sarah--I really got a sense of how they might have been as a couple in that one. I could see them having been really happy. So sad.

Question of the day: What episode frustrated Jack the most?
Well, although Jack was playacting in Shades of Gray, he was shockingly disrespectful, insubordinate, and angry about Hammond's defense of the Tollan's property that Jack stole. When I first saw that episode I couldn't believe the level of Jack's frustration.

i would say unnatural selection ...
i don't think that his decision at the end was as easily made as it appeared to others.
also being a very private man ... the invasion of his thoughts would have to have pushed him way out of his box!
then of course that would include the ep with Reese too!! I know Danny was furious with him for making the tough decision ... but as the man in charge he had to take in the BIG picture ...

I can't decide between Paradise Lost and Grace. PL because he was stuck with a flipped-out Maybourne on that crummy moon and Grace because one of his team was lost and he was powerless to help. Remember the scene in the locker room with Teal'c when he clearly showed his frustration over not being able to find Sam? That was a powerful moment.

Cor-Ai - Jack gets frustrated or mad cuz Hammond won't authorize troops to rescue Teal'c cuz he is not an American citizen (that get's me a little upset too, what happend to being a member of a Team and no one gets left behind)
Show and Tell - when Dr. Fraser is examining the boy and saying that there is nothing she can do and Jack's says "You got all this fancy equipment around here!"

In a mood for fic....
I had two thoughts recently of things that would make great fics, and wondered if anybody knew of any stories that fit these criteria. J/S ship is good (actually required for the second one), but please no slash.
1) Jack's life is endangered when he unknowingly acquires a female stalker. (Bonus points if it's a Goa'uld chick!) The team or just Sam save his skin, but if he's hurt first, it wouldn't be bad. <g>
2) Seeing as The Devil you Know was just on, does anybody know any fic, seeing as everybody we see in "hell" is a man, where Jack and Sam take steps to show the other inmates that she is *not* available. I've seen stories like this where they're in other prisons, but not on Netu. Adult ratings are acceptable. <g>
Thank you for any stories you can recommend.
I now return you to your regularly-scheduled JackThunking... <g>
